Despite being neither intelligent nor versed in biology, I like to approach races in fantasy at least vaguely evolutionarity. By that I mean that I want to give a vague explanation for why such traits would've arisen in certain populations other than "the gods did it".

If I were to put catfolk into my setting, I'd make them small sized with relatively large, floppy ears and make them desert dwellers. The idea would be the humanoid equivalent of a Fennec. Small and with proportionally massive ears in order to aid with losing heat in the scorching desert. As you may guess they don't fare well in northern regions unless they buy incredibly cute hats that cover their sensitive ears.

I don't get all the fuss about anime cat people.

I mean even if you play them straight they can be fun. I played a catboy servant who was literally auctioned off to the party (they were in a slaver city when I joined and I figured hey, lets have the introduction suit the location). He was scared and shaking at first but the party cleaned him up and treated him properly so he ended up becoming a valued member of the party (he was a bard mechanics-wise but was fluffed as a courtesan or geisha (male).) The rest of the players said they liked playing with him because of his personality, which was a weird mix of pessimistic cynicism coupled with these rare bursts of hope and optimism (which was his true personality but he was repressing it due to a life of having those hopes shattered) and also because they thought he was just cute in general.

Really you can play just about any archetype completely straight so long as their character is fleshed out and well-roleplayed.

Setting takes place in a modern "hidden city."
So it's in the real world, but the concept of well concealed and secretive cities existing in various places of the world, let in by invite only and populated by only the most rich and powerful.

Technologies not yet released to the public are present, and radically free and different law systems from host countries allow different societies to take place. Genetically engineered catgirls and other kemonomimis exist for those who can afford them. The highest prestige and cost would be a Kitsune, who are loyal and beautiful, but can't even be bought and talk only to those who are already welcomed or own a kitsune, and are protected by old copyright. The secretive kitsune even claim to be the real, and not just genetically modified humans....

General plot is shenanigans in the underbelly of the city, but with cute girls along the way.
