So I am thinking about getting into this game, I went to my LGS's Infinity night to watch a few games. I overheard some people complaining about people using proxies, saying they were "overpowered" and "too cheap." I'm kind of leery about starting a new game if people are hostile towards using proxies until I fill out my collection. And how can proxies be overpowered? $$$ I spend is not a balancing mechanism...I hope

user, I've traveled around the country for work, and I can tell you I've never personally seen that kind of thing happen. In fact, everyone is pretty much okay with proxies as long as you aren't trying to be a sneaky shitter about it.

I guess you can use the Grunts for when you want to spam the Infiltrator/Flamers + Core link. Otherwise I don't really see the point.

I think they were talking about the ALEPH Post-Human units, which are also called proxies. They're a very optimized unit with lots of special unique rules, and are often discussed in balance discussions as maybe too good for what you pay for.

Nah, simply using a proxy or two it's okay if the model for the profile doesn't exist yet, proxying an entire army is just being cheap and it gets very confusing

Grunts are probably useful if you want to run a core link and infiltrators. An extra foxtrot is always useful. Minuteman and Marauder might be useful when you're running core links and you want to properly represent repeat base profiles. Maverick might be useful if you want to run multiple but don't want to buy the Maverick box. I don't see much reason to run two Devil Dogs, though I guess you could occasionally for kicks.

So basically yes kind of but not really, beyond the Foxtrot and Grunts. You don't really need the extra Marauder, Minuteman, or Maverick if you own the supplementary unit boxes. You can skip the Maverick box if you haven't gotten it yet, but you need the Marauder/Minuteman boxes anyways if you want to run link teams of those units. The extras will simply be nice to have.

Nah those are Aleph posthuman proxies, as in, one of the few clearly undercosted units.

Proxies as in substitutes for models you don't have or aren't available, are generally pretty welcome. Even the tournaments usually have some rule like "X proxies allowed" or "units must match, weapon doesn't have to" and unreleased units and decent conversions are allowed too.

Two notable exceptions are if your whole list is such a convoluted maze of proxies it makes the opponent's eyes glaze over halfway through reading a list, or if you proxy the same units for months despite clearly having money and time to get and paint them.

They'll have been talking about Aleph posthumans that have models called proxy mk1, 2, 3 etc. They're cheap for what they bring, but not overpowered. Infinity is really well balanced among all the factions.
Infinity is generally friendly towards proxying models, especially as a bunch of profiles don't have models yet.
