Just remember that the number of shots you put out is the max number of models you can kill. I had an opponent last game try to fire a two-shot d6 damage weapon at a mob of fire warriors w/o mortal wounds, miss one shot but roll 6 for damage on the other and then get outraged when I only took one dude off the table.

True. Mostly I'm getting it to deal with all the Russ and other tankspam at my LGS, since it can fairly reliably deal with two Predators or Russes a turn or nuke a hostile Superheavy. If I need to kill anything with less than three or four wounds a model I turn to dakkabots and Corpuscarii, although I can see a Canticled up BS2+R1 Porphy doing a decent job at taking down Custodes bikers and termies.
Might eat an annoyingly large number of CP with Knight of the Cog and Rotate Ion Shields, but I guess that's the price for tanking a Volcano Cannon and only taking 9.33 wounds before almost instakilling it in return.

The whole coalition thing has always been far more interesting to me than the tech. They’re far more interesting a threat by being able to win people/species over to the cause. Love that cold war dynamic with fifth columns on Imperial worlds and these weird spaces where all sorts of xenos and humans are coralled into a society by the Tau (for better and for worse).
I remember a fanfic where the writer pointed out that the Tau armor for their human soldiers was great but they couldn’t make good boots to save their life because the Tau are so inwardly focused and have hooves. Love that shit.
