What would be an interesting setting for a campaign set in the Fallout universe? Florida gets brought up a lot for some reason, but are there any other locations that could work?

How about you pay for your own research?

>Florida gets brought up a lot for some reason
I wonder why a radioactive swamp infested with mutated gators, an amusement park the size of a mid sized town, and Cape Canaveral would appeal to people

Read the lore for Colorado. The prewar plauge and the boulder dome, denver being infested with thousands of rabid dog, the large amount of militarty bases in colorado.

You and your fellow PC's start out as slaves in legion captivity. You all have disparate backgrounds, but you'll have to band together after escaping if any of you hope to return to civilization in the west.

Hawaii

I don't care where it is as long as the New Vegas team makes it.

you just described florida now

>Hawaii

This was the setting for the post-apocalyptic far future in the novel Cloud Atlas, which also got a film adaptation. In the novel, it was referred to as "Big Island," and humans had reverted to tribalism.

Australia. Or anywhere outside of America.

The UK. I like the idea that a gun would be really rare, and that bringing it out is a sure fire way to get people to shut up and listen.
Also seeing how the rest of the world is outside America would be interesting, but I understand why they don't because Americana is so important to Fallout's identity.

I think the way to go about it is think of interesting trends and fads from the 50s and then blow those out of proportion for your setting. So white fight was a big deal in Detroit in the 50s with the rise of the white suburbs and constant race riots. The racism probably wouldn't fit for the fallout setting since it seems to have become pretty egalitarian for Americans before the bombs fell, but maybe you could have a sprawling sea of suburbs based shanty towns and within the city there's a massive ghoul population being held down by some jackbooted organization in an allusion to the politics of the time.

Everything iconic about fallout is american. The whole franchise is built on ideas of american exceptionalism and the american retro-future aesthetic. Fallout set outside of america would be unrecognizable as fallout.

The franchise is built on the idea of rampant, unchecked capitalism and how it leads to societal breakdown. I mean literally every corporation you come across is either staffed by sociopaths or doing something extremely dangerous and unethical. The enclave are just an allegory for an American ruling class with absolute disdain for their working class brethren. You're right that it's uniquely American though.

>humans had reverted to tribalism
So basically California before NCR? Probably a good chunk of the rest of the country too.

>In the novel, it was referred to as "Big Island,"
That is what it is referred to right now stop people from other states from getting confused.

Appalachia region. The areas that didn't get hit with much radiation wouldn't change much, I reckon. Guns everywhere, most everyone is self-sufficient and can back up what they say. The more metro areas (Louisville, Lexington, Columbus, Huntington, etc.) are mostly ghoul infested no-go zones that only the most experienced individuals go to for specific supplies (meds, machine parts, etc.) I'd imagine it would play out similar to the Fall of Rome and the Middle Ages where there were essentially wealthy landowners that controlled areas of the Appalachia. Maybe I'm wrong, I think it sounds cool. The only major corporations in the area are steel mills, railroad, and coalmines; they're pretty much gone. Aren't many military bases. It would be mostly left to the people.

True, but the War affected more than just one location. And there's clearly an interest to see these locations. I think it'd be interesting to see how other governments would try to survive after the great war, and mitigate the damage America and China would inflict.
As for certain iconography, you could still have certain game staples present and claim that they're imports. Companies branch out overseas, so it's not impossible.
I think rampant capitalism, and sociopaths in higher social ranks can be explored in other countries outside of America. I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of the Fallout universe so I'm not entirely sure which countries are communist and which aren't, but I think it'd be unlikely that every location outside of the United States would have chosen communism given it's track history.
I dunno, I just think it'd be cool to fight a Giant mutant sting ray with a skeleton inside that has a crocodile hunter costume.

How about NewOrleans? Lots of interesting culture and history there.

Rural appalachia wouldn't change much and I say this as an appalachian
the only difference is people's diesel trucks would be modified to literally roll coal instead of diesel
Also, fuck you talkin' about? There's Ft. Knox just south of Louisville, which is an entirely self-sufficient base in the event of a disaster, and Fort Campbell as well. Rural Kentucky in general would be boring as fuck, just miles of empty plains with nothing notable besides mammoth cave.
New Orleans or Florida is the only way to go

Well that's what I mean, there wouldn't be much federal control due to the hills. I totally agree, there likely wouldn't be much change. I live near Ashland, about an hour and a half north of Lexington. I think it would fit neat with a d20 game though. Although, Florida, Louisiana, or Alabama would probably be loads better. There isn't a lot of room around here for unique FO monsters, is there? Yeah, Florida is already crazy anyways, nuclear war might make it tamer.

Personally I would like to see China, if only for the inevitable mutated Mekong Catfish (Turns out radiation did something right and brought at least one species back from the brink) and seeing if the Sub Captain made it after all. There is something about wanting to get home again, even if there is nothing left of it, and rebuilding it board by board that tugs at the heartstrings for me.

Always thought it was weird that, despite the 1950s iconography, the great industrial centers never got much work on them. Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, etc. I'd also like to see LA further developed from what it was like in Fallout 1.

>Fallout: Australia
>It's Fury Road but with beer making robots and all the guns are 22's, seventy year old Lee Enfields, or break action shotguns loaded with birdshot
>Melee combat is actually more effective than guns
>Energy weapons are non-existent
>The wildlife is exactly the same except five times larger and everything that wasn't venomous before sure as hell is now

>seventy year old Lee Enfields
The nukes were dropped in 2077. They'd have to be a hundred and twenty years old at the absolute least.

IDK man, Florida kind of already IS post-apocalyptic enough IRL.

The was actually supposed to be a spin-off set in Europe/Middle East that never got off the ground. An American setting is not strictly necessary.

I've wanted to run a campaign in Australia for so very long. Giant funnel web spiders, death roos, drop bears (hint, they're actually burrowers), land sharks, dino crocks, super emus. It'd be great.

It wouldn't be to hard to justify more modern weapons in Australia. Australia has a bunch of natural resources like oil and uranium. I could see China invading and the US coming to back up (totally not going to annex it) Australia.
So caches for both sides could still be kicking around.

There’s no China left in the fallout world. It’s a single massive radioactive crater, because the US focused their nukes in singular locations while the Chinese spread their nukes out over mainland US

I’m sure that one famous Australian gaming company could pick it up and do it justice. You know, that one

Try South America.
Shit would be fucking intense with irradiated jaguars everywhere.

yeah uh about that whew uh...
china's a whole crater. they just..were wiped off the face of the world.

Beyond Boulder Dome and Dog City Denver are both great New Vegas mods that explore these places, everyone should play them.

>The US annexes Australia
As long as we get the second amendment that's fine with me

Counterpoint, you could play the retro-futurism pretty well in other countries
>blatant utopist propaganda in USSR and east europe, fascination with nuclear power and socialist realism
>Walking up the empty Champs Elysées in France, Edith Piaf blasting on your radio, remnants of President De Gaulle giant posters on the walls
>Spain stuck eternally in the ruins of Franco

comfy

Atlanta and it's surrounding area.
With Coke being founded there, it's perfect for a good Nuka-Cola plotline, the geography is pretty diverse, and you could have Mutant Kudzu.

Also they could make Spaghetti Junction, the most congested roadway in the world, a gigantic deathmaze without hardly changing anything.

I'd like to see something set more northerly. Maybe a war between Chicago and Detroit, for control of Lake Michigan. See some naval action, mutated lake monsters, hit up Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit and Toronto (which we already know exists in the form of Ronto). Maybe the Pitt is selling guns to one, some, or all sides in exchange for slaves or raider recruits. Fauna could include radioactive moose, more weird aquatic creatures, da bears, tons of stuff.

Ug-Qualtoth. He comes. He is the key and the gatekeeper. He is the fire in the sky. Ug-Qualtoth water for the old god, blood for the new god.

Set in the deep south
Hillbilly tribals drunk on moonshine
A bit of hills have eyes/deliverance horror
Mutant wild boars, even pig people
Bring back the Wanamingos from F2 and have them fighting stranded aliens in some kind of AVP scenario

Could also include native americans trying to drive out the invaders (non natives)

Inbreed hillbillys with some lovecraftian flavor? Try point lookout the dlc for FO3. Maybe with "tale of two wastelands" to get the improvements New Vegas brought.

Speaking of annexation, I remember that the US prez got in trouble for annexing Canada in Fallout. Maybe add hoards of Mounties attacking the northern cities to show Canada has not forgotten or forgiven their southern neighbour.
