Thread Question: How actively invested in current events are warlock patrons in your setting/campaign, if applicable?

I can't wait until Tome of Foes comes out with more Raven Queen info so I can murder her fucking ass in a shadowfell campaign arc

I am entirely certain that I'd have to take Tavern Brawler AND Dual Wielder to do that. Or Shield Mastery for the sake of shoving stuff, but still.

Is my teen tomboyish monk girl a slut for sleeping with her swashbuckler boyfriend on the same day they got together? They did meet 2 years ago when said swashbuckler was a ship crewboy and he did promise to marry her.

If they weren't invested then why the frick frack would they bother being a patron? Even if they're just doing it for fun, for crying out loud guys make sure that you actually have warlock patrons turn up and do something every once in a while, even if it's just visiting the warlock in a dream. Also why is it that somehow all of the suitable warlock patrons have access to eldritch blast? And yet wizards don't? Also, can a patron give access to powers that they don't have?

>the first two in this list are actually correct though

Wizards arent charismatic enough to learn eldritch blast.

I've been training her for a while now. I shouldn't be rolling for menial tasks like mounting my own weasel

I wouldn't say so.

Been pondering the Redemption Paladin's role the past few days. It seems like it wants to basically be a battleground controller, taking hits on the frontlines, but on second look I think it's main power is a backline support class.

The main utility is the aura where you can basically take damage for any ally within 10ft, which in the back line basically means your bard, wizard, etc who may be needing to concentrate on some important spells for battlefield superiority. You can take little arrow or spell potshots directed at them and soak them up with your higher HP pool and access to innate healing from lay on hands and can further support the back by attacking any sneaky foes that breech the front lines with a well placed smite. Further utility comes in with the channel divinity which can make any enemy who lands a big hit on your frontline barbarian regret that they did so. I've toyed with making the paladin a V. Human with the tough feat to have a higher HP pool and with multiclassing into divine soul sorcerer to get access to more healing/support spells and metamagic to bolster your spellcasting. Any thoughts on it? Anyone actually play the subclass yet?

It's eldritch blast, not magic blast. Wizards aren't strange enough to be eldritch.

>If they weren't invested then why the frick frack would they bother being a patron?
Great Old One patrons are explicitly stated in the PHB to be potentially "unaware of your existence or entirely indifferent to you."
The Archfey's motivations are also stated to often be whimsical, so they might be entirely uninterested in what you do with their abilities outside of events on their own plane.

No, you shouldn't, and your DM is a fag for trying to say otherwise.
Tell him to stop.

Be honest, /5eg/. How often do you play edgy characters?

Anyone here ever run a marine campaign?

Ok really bad example I'm sorry, I just mean that it's this one, really specific cantrip and I don't understand why Archfey, Great Old Ones and Fiends all seem to share it, while other super charismatic powerful magical beings like dragons and sorcerers seem to have made no steps to do so? What do all of the patrons have in common?

Well yeah but Great Old Ones are Great Old Ones, I'm okay with the explanation of the archfey being whimsical but still, they're going pay at least some attention, there's no point in ignoring your brand new, ever growing more powerful toy is there?

No but I kind of want to do one eventually along the lines of the argosy.

Define edgy.

Always

If you've been thinking about buying the PHB (that's right people actually buy stuff) now's the time. Amazon has it for under $21

Been thinking on and off about doing a campaign set in Ravenloft's Sargoss Sea. the Dark lord is a Were shark pirate cleric that's afraid of/hates sharks.

That's a good deal but damn who's been waiting this long for a hardcopy

Its like porn. Hard to define but you know it when you see it.

Rarely, but I turn it up to 11.

>Not being a Level 20th Farmer Rancher with a herd of 200 cats.

...

>misaligned table
REEEEEEEEEEEE

...

You shouldn't be rolling for everything (or at least, the rolls should get easier over time), but if your weasel is literally just an animal you found in the wild, it's not unreasonable that it should snap at strangers or disobey you occasionally. If you want a mount that's been bred for generations and trained since birth to be obedient and submissive, get a dog or a pony.

Like at least 3 players in my group.

>my brother bought his copy last week for $30
>this happens

Be honest, /5eg/. How often do you play honorable characters?

Literally me. I ordered mine two days ago.

Fuck this gay earth.

>1gp or wife

>When reaching 10th level, a rancher's herd may now contain any living creature with an intelligence under 4 regardless of type, so long as they are made of flesh or plant matter
Zombie Ranch anyone?

It was a trained weasel that was being used by a gnome so its pretty docile. I found it after its former master got ORC'D

>25 Zombie Horses using hoof attack at the same time

>living creature

>Not just enfeebling the mind of 50 orcs and making them your herd.

What bard college is best for doing out of combat RP shenanigans? I'm having an itch to jazz it up with a saxophone.

Alright, this is my first draft of the note from the little Alchemist in the back for the Rogue guy thoughts?

(Character name), I have written this letter God knows how many times, to only push it away in disappointment for how it turned out, but now the only feeling of disappointment I have is in myself for needing it to tell you how much I love you. Before meeting you, my life was nothing special, and only revolved around the science and mechanics that made life bearable, but after meeting you and your friends there was a spark of something I have not felt since I left my home 6 years ago... You inspire me to become a better person and to help others, I understand that they may sound absurd, but it’s true. Everything I create, every movement of my hands, and every new thought of creation brings a loving vibrant image of you, and suddenly I could only wish you were there by my side... Though it may be futile, I want to be able to impress you, please you, and protect you as you have for me. Each day I spend with you brings me new thoughts, new desires, new passions, and joy…yet no matter how much I pray or create, I can’t help but fear you will one day leave me and I won’t be able to see you or hold you close and tell you I love you… I love you and I need you… I need you to stay alive, I need you to come back to me safe and smiling like I have to you. I can only hope my love is strong enough to hold and comfort you even when I’m not there to show it. That way when we see each other again you will feel that same spark I feel when I see you.

Whispers for pretending to be people you offed.
Glamour isn't bad either.

That’s some gay shit, user. Be careful not to send the wrong signals.

>living
>zombies
Idiot

Pretty often. I'm an edgelord and I accept it.

Lore, and pick spells from any fucking class in the game that you want to use for messing around.

>Rise again as a skeleton after 1d6 days
Is this like a fucking 3rd level litch

The only one I can identify readily is the generic Coldsteel the hedgeheg edgelord.

Gay as in it's not good or gay as in homosexual? I almost forgot to mention it comes in a handmade box with these in as well.

Needs more erect dicks.

>Team's monk wants to take a long rest inside the redbrand hideout
>I don't want to do it here. We're just around the exit. Lets exit the place and take a long rest on the town which is barely a step away
>Nobody wants to sleep in a cave full of thieves
>Roll persuasion everyone else roll charisma saving throws
>mfw

As in it sounds like you are confessing personal feelings to another player. Going that far out of your way for an in-character interaction is weird and suggests there is something more than rp there.

What's the best use of polymorph outside of the T-Rex?

>enter city
>it has a mithril mine
>obviously try to enter the mine with the dwarf barbarian
>need to be certified in some way to do so
>don't feel like going through the process
>mine is at the bottom of a very large, very deep pit
>pit has a guy who sends people down or brings them up via pulley elevator
>go through 3 Deception checks speaking with the guy in order to fool him into thinking the dwarf and I certified and allowed to enter
>pass all of them, guy's fooled
>go down into the mine
>miners are blowing out chunks of the wall with dynamite and collecting the mithril
>everything's overlooked by a quatermaster
>OOC, other people at the table are trying to give me advice about sneaking through
>decide to boldly and confidently walk through the middle of everyone, right past the quatermaster,

>Steal something
>Get caught
>Change into a dog around a corner

Why?

Oh, that's not the intention, I'm just trying to put some effort into a letter from an NPC.

>grab a box of dynamite with the dwarf, and carry it deeper into the mine
>do it
>nobody notices that we're not supposed to be there
>get to mining
>accidentally mine our way into an unexplored cavern
>monstrosity hidden inside
>gearing up to be a tough fight immediately
>no problem
>Polymorph it into a lizard
>dwarf pockets it
>run back to the elevator
>ring the bell to let the guy know we want to come back up
>go up
>pause at the top of the pit
>dwarf tosses it over the side
>end concentration as it's in the middle of the arc
>pulley operator's jaw drops as the lizard transforms back and plummets
>after a bit of silence distantly hear a satisfying splat at the bottom
>also hear miners start freaking out
>decide to let the appropriate authorities know
>want to get into the city mayor's building
>head over there with the dwarf barbarian because I can't leave him alone
>have to speak with the guard first
>don't want to get in trouble for going down in the mine when we weren't allowed to, lie about being allowed down there
>DM has me make Deception checks after everything I say to see if the guard becomes suspicious
>after a half-dozen checks, all passed, we can finally go in
>speak with the mayor about some shit that went down in the city mine
>DM keeps making me roll Deception
>keep passing the checks
>lying through my teeth harder than any man's ever lied before
>trick the mayor into think we were certified
>get our reward
>leave
>went through all that lying and passed over a dozen checks
>all because I didn't want to go through the effort of getting certified
>DM told us afterwards that the certification process was really fucking easy and cheap
>just had to talk to someone, pass a simple test, and pay a really inexpensive fee
>but it was too much work and I could't be assed

Looks like I'll be joining a group that's about a quarter of the way through Phandelver on Monday. Seeing as how the current party (Whispers Bard, Evoker Wizard, and Alchemist Arcanist) is lacking anything that can stand on the front lines, I'm rolling with Samurai. Everyone is level 4 (which I thought was odd, given that LMoP is usually a 1-4 adventure, but I heard the DM likes making tough encounters, so it kinda makes sense) and has 1 uncommon magical item that they can start with.

I'm torn on what to grab for my item, as there are a lot of really neat and situational items that I could grab, plus I've never played a straight up Martial class in 5e. The practical part of me is saying that either a Luckstone or a Cloak of Protection would be the best choice, as I'll be the one taking a lot of hits. Anyone got any recommendations as to what a tanky Fighter should grab?

>>just had to talk to someone, pass a simple test, and pay a really inexpensive fee
>>but it was too much work and I could't be assed
Now that's how you play a Chaotic aligned character.

Really nigga, is your monk's int like 4 or something?

She rolled 22 while we all failed. We HAVE to stay in the cave now

No you don't.

Some sort of longsword, take Duelist, become the Slamurai.

I'd say this is your fault for not know Leomund's Tiny Hut, but you're probably only level 2.

Fine, the monk gets to take first watch then.

I'm roleplaying a dumb character but even he isn't as dumb not to recognize how stupid that idea is. I can't leave cos my DM says that my character thinks that monk's idea is really good thanks to her 22 persuasion roll :^)

>DM allowing Persuasion vs PC

SHIT
DM

Almost as bad as that fucking Elf Ranger and her magic panther out of nowhere because WAH YOU WON'T BURY THE WOLVES

>letting another player mind control your character with social dice rolls
Who's the real retard here?

>Alchemist Arcanist
What?
Anyway, there aren't a whole lot of magic items for Tanks.
There's the obvious utility.
>Bag of Holding
>Immovable Rod
>Goggles of Night (If you don't already have Darkvision)
>Rope of Climbing
Then there's stuff like weapons and armour.
>Adamantine Armor
>Mithral Armour
>Weapon of Warning
>Sentinel Shield
>Generic +1s

Tell the DM he doesn't get to decide what the character thinks and leave the fucking cave.

This desu.

Doing a persuasion vs insight check is how it should be, but even then it should never sway the player's opinion. That's only if you're on the fence and want to role-play it in character.

Is Crown of Stars good even for a Sorcerer? Not needing to waste points on quickening cantrips seems really good, especially for radiant damage.

Yes, its good, it saves up on Sorcerery points and that's a great thing!

On the topic of using Social skill on another player, I always rule it the same way as CoC, you get to inflict Disadvantage on a single roll if you succeed the roll but they still don't want to do it.

>Buy PHB, monster guide, and XGtE for 50 each from my flgs a couple weeks ago
Whaow, at least I'm supporting Mark's cool little shop, and I got the XGtE alt cover

>Alchemist Arcanist
> What?

Sorry, meant to say Artificer there. I like the weapon of warning, as that'll help prevent us getting ganked when we're extremely vulnerable, plus advantage on initiative is a nice bonus. Does RAW allow such a weapon to later be "upgraded" to a +1/2/3? I'm curious as to whether or not the weapon needs to be drawn for the advantage on initiative rolls to take effect. If not, I can just make it a small, easy to carry weapon like a dagger that's concealed somewhere on my person.

This might be a dumb question but do alchemist artificers get infinite alchemist fire and acid and shit?

Geeze user, you got me worrying about the player's maturity to the whole situation, but I'm going to push that the player has enough maturity to dissociate the NPCs/PCs to the DM/other players. If a player went all out as a bard and wrote a love song for another PC or NPC I don't see any of my players thinking "Oh that must be for me! Even though he showed no signs... He's trying to get to me through my D&D character." Seems like a pretty big jump in logic.

Afaik, getting a magic item upgraded is more annoying than just straight up enchanting on a blank item.
LMoP does have an "Enchanting Brazier" type thing that lets you put a +1 on items.
Not sure if it would give a temp +2 to an already +1

Yeah, but the UA is still shitty.

Bitch just PDF it

>Unearthed Arcana: Into The Wild (Part II)

Starting a new campaign soon as a mid level Celestial Pact warlock. My patron is a Kirin and was wondering, lore wise, what it would use a warlock in its service to accomplish. Are there specific threats that Kirin are against?

Be sure to cast Animate Dead on her corpse to insult her in the most personal way possible.

I want to make a Dragonborn Paladin but I have literally no ideas beyond that.

Kirin are messengers of gods, so you could name any good god's enemies and that is probably fine for a Kirin.

They're just generically Lawful Good, I'm sure you can come up with something.

Okay, and?

>Okay, and?
That's all I had to say honestly.

Good luck, user, I'm sure you'll come with something!

What would I be in for as a Warlock of the Great Old Ones, aside from spamming EB in combat? Will I ever have other combat options? Are all the handy-sounding at-will tricks worth it? Are warlocks as useless as Veeky Forums says?

Did you... wanna try and brew up some character ideas?

5eg how would you deal with a character that has a drug addiction? Every time I think about making one the idea just ends up sounding cringe tier

Here ya go from XgtE.

>Overview
You are a 42 year old neutral good dragonborn noble adventuring as a paladin.

You became a noble because you hope to increase your family's power and influence.
You became a paladin because you served as a paladin's squire, learning all you needed to swear your own sacred oath.

>Background (Noble)
Trait: Despite my noble birth, I do not place myself above other folk. We all have the same blood.
Ideal: Family. Blood runs thicker than water.
Bond: Nothing is more important than the other members of my family.
Flaw: I have an insatiable desire for carnal pleasures.
>Class (Paladin)
Personal Goal: Revenge. Your oath is the vehicle through which you will right an ancient wrong.
Symbol: An upraised open hand, indicating your preference for diplomacy over combat
Nemesis: None
Temptation: Fury. When your anger is roused, you have trouble thinking straight, and you fear you might do something you'll regret.

>Family
Your mother works as a farmer or herder, while your father works as an academic.

You had 1 sibling.

a older brother who works as a priest. They are alive, but doing poorly due to injury, financial trouble, or relationship difficulties. You get on with each other.
>Upbringing
You were born at home.

You were raised by your single mother or step mother and had a comfortable lifestyle, living in a small house.

Your father is dead. Consumed by a monster.

>Life Events (3)
You fought in a battle. You acquitted yourself well in battle and are remembered as a hero. You might have received a medal for your bravery
You lost all your possessions in a disaster, and you had to rebuild your life.
You found a treasure map.
>Trinket
Currently in your possession you have a candle that can't be lit

>GOOlock
Can be fun, depends on how you play them.

>aside from spamming EB in combat
You'll be stuck spamming EB in combat.

>Will I ever have other combat options?
Until you run out of spell slots, sure. So you'll have about 2 non-EB combat options and then it's back to EB spamming.

>Are all the handy-sounding at-will tricks worth it?
Best part of the class IMO. DMs should definitely give invocation boosting magical equipment to the party warlock.

>Are warlocks as useless as Veeky Forums says?
They're pretty mediocre. But can be tons of fun all the same.

Oath of Vengeance paladin, thats main goal is to seek vengeance on the enemy of his dragon type. I think most dragons hate giants.

I think I'll give it a go.

Every warlock player I've talked to played the class because of the flavor and felt completely cut off from that flavor by the mechanical limitations. It should have been a background instead of a class. A wizard can do anything a warlock can except regain two spell slots on short rests.

Paladin 2 / Divine Soul Sorcerer 5

Starting a campaign at Lv.7 and I wanted to make a Sorcadin to support the party, but also deal some melee damage.

Party comp is a Moon Druid, Assassin Rogue, Lore Bard, Draconic Sorcerer, and Hexblade Bladelock. (The DracSorc player is completely ineffectual in roleplay+combat. Druid is a bear for 90% of all combat.)

Sword & Board, Warforged, Chain Mail so I have 20 AC.

I picked spells like Booming Blade, Green-Flame Blade, Minor Illusion, Disguise Self, Invisibility, Haste, Web, Cure Wounds, Bless.

Chose Twinned and Quicken metamagics.

Are there any 1st - 3rd level spells I should add? Maybe swap one I already picked?

I want to make a gnome. Give me interesting class ideas. No wizards.

Yeah, just don't. It forces your DM to decide what drugs are in this setting, how they work, what they cost, how intoxication, withdrawal, and overdose work for each of them, and a lot of other shit that he was almost certainly planning to skip entirely. All for the purpose of making your character more annoying and unreliable to the party (unless the drug's so soft that it never causes any kind of problem whatsoever and is just window dressing.)
