Let's create a Super Powers setting

Let's play a little character and setting creating/writing game, Veeky Forums

Say in this setting 33+% of population are born with super powers and mutations of all kinds. We can fill out the rest as we go.

So, here's the deal: You make a 1d6 roll, and I'll give you a random power based on it. Then you make a character based on that.

Make a short backstory, how their powers effected their life and what did they decide to do with them. Are they a villain, a hero or something else? Does this world even has heroes? Well, feel free to fill out the details of the setting with your characters.

Keep in mind that once user made a character, details of their backstory become "canon" to the world, so make sure to continue where they left off or at least not contradict it.

Rolled 4 (1d6)

I will also be posting art from related media for your insperation

...

[LIQUID OOZE] (Mutant)

You body is made of a transparent, blue ooze like material. At your command it can somewhat harden and maintain humanoid form, or transform into a completely liquid ooze. At your command, your ooze body can be slippery as oil or sticky like glue. As liquid you can move freely. You can create sensory organs on your surface to see, hear, smell etc. as well as a mouth. You body can be separated into parts, you conscious stays in the biggest chunk, small chunks will dissolve over time. You only need water and sunlight to live, and you restore any ooze that you loose over time.

Rolled 3 (1d6)

Rolled 5 (1d6)

Forgot to roll so I'll just give you a rando

[GENE SPONGE] (Mutant)

Every time you touch a vertebrate animal that isn't human, your body copies some of that DNA giving you features, parts of than animal. The process is random by default but with training you can learn control it. Parts acquired can be fully animalistic or a hybrid of human and animal physiology. When touching an animal that is smaller or bigger than you, you can choose to either scale it's parts to human size, or change your body size to in between yours and that of the animal.
You body can store 5 animal features. After touching an animal, one of the old one has to be exchanged. You can't deactivate your power.

[FATHER FIGURE] (Shapeshifter)

By touching a person you can fully transform to that person's biological father. Effect lasts for 24 hours or until deactivation.

[BIG BROTHER] (Sensor)

Within a 1 km radius you can "connect" to any functioning device that has video camera and receive that footage straight into your eyes. You can connect up to 8 different devises, 4 for each eye, although that strains your eyes and might give you a headache.
As long as devise is functioning and has an electricity charge, you can use it's camera even if the devise is turned off or in a sleeping mode

I'll let someone else come up with the back story but here's the idea

>Blue Saver

A trained emergency rescue specialist who was exposed to a nano-gel substances that reduced his body into a thick viscous blue mass while attempting to save the very scientist who made it.

Overwhelmed with guilt, especially since the Docter had not found a way to reverse the process swore to help the man who saved his life and created a special hard suit that allows him to control the limbs as if they were a fully functioning body and attach various pieces of equipment while being able to endure several environmental extremes needing only a tank of water and some nutrients to keep him going

...

Rolled 2 (1d6)

FATHER FIGURE is a notorious con man who has used his ability to defraud wealthy families of hundreds of millions of dollars. Now hiding from extradition in China he has found a new way to make money and win allies. He sells his tissues, particularly bone marrow, to people struggling to find compatible donors. As the tissue adapts itself to mimic the patient's father's gene it is rarely rejected.

So are there only six powers up for grabs?

Rolled 1 (1d6)

Agh, I fucked up.

Rolled 3 (1d6)

Scott Turpin was a humble NSA analyst, a desk jockey tasked with sorting and archiving hundreds of hours of surveillance footage that passed through NSA servers. Until the day he accidentally opened a video file that was not meant for his eyes...or any human eyes at all.

The video was a cascading stream of some form of incredibly advanced computer code - even if he could not comprehend it, the simple act of laying eyes upon it twisted his physiology in some way, altering his brain and nervous system so he could psychically connect to cameras.

Knowing he would be hunted, captured, and dissected, Scott fled, going underground and leaving his old life behind. Now he walks in a shadowy world of secrecy, spies, and surveillance, attempting to track down the machine codes creator so as to reverse what was done to him. And all the while he must avoid the NSA capture teams, as well as the agents of various government and criminal organizations who would love nothing more than to make him their puppet.

Scott Turpin is the Cameraman.

I know you said mutants OP but I don't know if you specifically meant people that were born with their powers or were mutated in some way later in life.

[SHAPE OF WATER]

With a mental command you can "time freeze" any water around you. After freezing, it becomes unaffected by gravity or any other external force, perfectly staying in the shape that it was in when you activated your power, suspended in a sort of stasis. For anyone interacting with it, it feels like an extremely hard, unbreakable material. You can effect up to 10 liters of water at a time, in a 5 meter radius. With mental concentration you can upkeep the effect for as long as you like. You need to have at least a passing eye contact with the liquid. The cleaner the water, the greater the effect but very dirty or mixed water effect becomes very weak.

[HONEY BEE]

With just a touch you can transform any honey into living and breathing bees, that you can then perfectly control with your mind. The default bee kind is a regular honey bee but with time, you can learn to alter the output, choosing different species of bees and even mixing their features into completely new kinds of bees
Bees, man

Did you do something similar to this a while ago, where you made powers determined by the poster's favorite rpg class and season of birth?

[WHITE LION]

In an instant you can take form of a giant, albino lion. This lion is much bigger, stronger and faster than a normal one, but still a living and breathing lion. The transformation both ways happens at an instant.

[FEVER SHOP]

Your power allows you to "collect" diseases and illness from different people and giving them away with a 5 second touch. When the disease is taken , the person becomes fully healed and when you give it away, the person instantly becomes sick. If you take in more than 10 diseases, one of them has a chance to activate within your body. Power only works on living humans. You can't take or give away your own illness.

Power doesn't work on physical trauma, like lost limbs, broken bones and wounds.

Rolled 3 (1d6)

Give me something cool, OP!

yep, that's me

roll is only for the type of power, the rest I make up on the spot
except if anybody gets dubs, trips or a zero on the end of their No.

Vic Vinegar was going nowhere with his life, a forty year old stock boy at a local grocer's, when he discovered he possessed a most peculiar ability when cleaning up a spill on aisle seven. As he mopped, his jerk manager Steven, some 17 year old little prick, casually strode by and told him he missed a spot. Vic knelt down with some paper towels and the honey on the floor seeped through, coming in contact with his fingertips. Despite being initially totally grossed out by getting stickiness on his hands he saw the entire spill turn into a swarm of bees. And the time all he was thinking about was how much he hates everyone in the store and so the bees began to attack everyone in it.
Vic quickly put two and two together when the bees never stung him and even flew where he looked. After violently getting everyone's eyes stung, Vic grabbed the tapes from the security room's cameras and fled. Vic now is still going nowhere with his life, but he is living a relatively stress-free life fueled by petty thievery under the cover of massive bee attacks. He may also be helping in keeping plants better pollinated, helping to alleviate global fears about dwindling bee populations.

Rolled 6 (1d6)

Gibsmedat

Amazing, I actually haven't thought about that last use for the power.

I like it! And the origins are fine, we are making up the setting as we go after all.

I'm thinking that ultimately, all the powers must have a single, mysterious source, but maybe they can be transmitted through a millions different ways, with the original source always staying in the shadows.

[LIGHTNING SHIFT]

When you focus mentally, you can transform yourself into a living lightning charge. Physically, you carry all the properties of a real lightning, including it's speed, except you can freely choose the direction where it goes. You are not conscious when you are in lightning form, for you the time just skips. Instead, you can mentally "program" lightnings direction and trajectory right before transforming. At the end of that path, you will always instantly turn back.
When in lightning form, you can not be suspended in air, it can only exist in motion.

Rolled 2 (1d6)

Any feelings on double dipping?

[MEMENTO]

When you look people in the eyes and activate your power, you are able to transmit the memories of your life to the memories of that person. If the target is unaware of your power, the process is subtle, and they can not distinguish between their original memories and yours. They have to think long and hard or be confronted with obvious evidence to realize that something with their memory is wrong. If the person is aware of your power, it becomes pretty easy to distinguish between the two.
You can only transmit a portion of memories at once, a specific scene, day or a subject. You can not transmit fantasies or lies, only memories as you remember them

Calvin Dussle was a cop fed up with the system he'd been part of for years. While he was sent off to arrest druggies and break up parties, real criminals; mobsters, gangsters, and corrupt politicians ran freely. He knew the police force was in their pocket, and he didn't know what to do. He didn't want to play ball though, that was for certain, and his superiors decided that just wouldn't do.

During a storm, the chief and his loyal ones tried to get rid of Calvin, and make it look like an accident, and flooded rooms with exposed wires make for some nasty accidents. Calvin knew exactly what this was the moment he was pushed into the sparks, and he was filled with rage along with volts of electricity. But Calvin didn't go down; something in him turned on, and he changed. When he came to, the police station was full of blood and scorched bodies, and Calvin had a new purpose.

Bring justice to the world his own way. Not systems to hold him back. Just one quick zap and things would be set right.

this guy is an edgy villain thinking he's a good guy, just so we're all clear.

thread is pretty slow, so I don't mind

[PAPER PRESS]

By putting your both hands on an object, you can turn it into a printed out image of that object. The shape and size are relative to that of the original's. The material of that printout feels like paper, but it can not be torn apart or destroyed, except for extreme conditions.
With a snap of a finger, you can turn the object back to it's original form. Otherwise, the object will reverse back when you fall asleep. If the object is a living thing, they do not remain conscious when in pressed down form.
You can effect object up to twice your weight. You can't effect only a part of the object, except if that part can naturally come off.

dice+1d6

I'm thinking maybe the source of the powers is a kind of a dormant virus, that activates with certain individuals during times of stress, giving them power based on their mental and emotional state and/or the outside stimuli.

Maybe the video that Scott saw was part of a government experiment with the virus - it was developed for their hackers, to try and trigger virus inside them to develop something that could interact with technology. For Scott it connected with the way he usually interacts with technology - watching camera footage.

Rolled 6 (1d6)

This seems super fun.

I definitely like the idea of the virus acting on outside stimuli. Maybe first generation heroes/villains gained their powers mostly by accident or shady government experiments, but second generation has people actively contracting the virus and looking for specific events they can use to trigger unique powers.

I'll just take that as a 5 dude, heh

[EMOTION AROMA]
With you special nose, you are able to smell emotions of other people. Every emotions has a very distinct smell for you and you can easily identify them. Even more than that, you can smell the emotions that people leave behind - you able to get a sense of what people in the room felt like after they are long gone and even track a person by following the smell of feelings that they left behind (as long as their emotional state does't suddenly change)

Rolled 5 (1d6)

Get ready to be amazed, OP

Even if they failed to roll, what about the part where they got dubs?

aye, another 6, I like these ones

[COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS]

By transmitting your saliva to other people, you are able to "posses" their body, adding them to a sort of network, where you are able to control many bodies at once as if they are all yours. Your limit is 10 humans or animals, pushing beyond that is dangerous for you mental health. The control breaks if the body suffers a big shock, or when the body looses consciousness or goes to sleep. You can not push the body beyond what it's capable of, so if it doesn't receive nourishment or sleep for a long time, it will loose consciousness.

Rolled 1 (1d6)

Neat stuff, OP.

OP, you mind making a list of heroes and villains made so far just so peeps can start making characters with that "established lore" in mind?

Mary "Asclepia" Dallon is the daughter of a notorious arms dealer specializing in biological agents. She was the inoculation ground for many of his strains, primed with a retroviral agent which kept her symptoms dormant...mostly. One day she got fed up with her father using her to breed pestilence and killed him in his sleep with a plague of his own making. The only trace of it left exists in her; she's taking it to the grave.

Years of exposure to biohazards has left her pallid, asthmatic and sickly looking, but with a robust immune system and encyclopedic knowledge of symptoms and treatments. It has also made her obsessive compulsive over cleanliness and hygiene, to the point where she normally wears gloves and a surgical mask wherever she goes.

She's currently a med student and unaffiliated cape, using her knowledge and powers to heal as many people as she can. Mary is very popular at her university for taking on her friends' hangovers/colds/STIs, then treating them "the old fashioned way." She has given people minor illnesses when upset, but the worst was giving her ex's new girlfriend crabs when she was a freshman.

So Double Cross? That'd make
Ridiculously useful in a black market situation.

shoot, I missed the dubs. Oh well, he failed to roll and I failed to look at the dubs, so let's say we are even

[FACT OR FICTION]
Whenever you read any text, you can always tell if what you read is true to live or not. Whether the text describes past events, facts about people or places, you can always tell what part is true and what is not.
Unfortunately reading fiction books can sometimes be a little bit straining, since every other paragraph gives your brain a buzz that you get when reading lies.

oo, our first "zero", I'm gonna make it special then
You get a "curse" - power that has drastic negative effects

[SEVEN SINS]
Whenever you feel compelled by one of the deadly sins, an variety of creatures get's born from your body. You can not control or turn off your power:

If you feel envy, Imp is born, small mischievous creature, that will stop at nothing to destroy the thing you got envious of. Feeling of greed creates a similar Imp, who instead steals the desired object, and brings it to you.

If you get overwhelmed by sloth,Silent Demon is born, that desires nothing but keep you laying in bed and sleeping for as long as possible.

If you feel gluttony, Fat Devil is born, that desires to keep providing you with the thing that you craved for, without end or stop.

When you feel anger, Hell Hound is born, powerful beast that wants to destroy, whatever made you angry

Feeling of pride, will create a Fury, a winged demon that will praise you to no end and harm anyone who refuses to do the same.

I'll leave the Lust to your imagination, dear user

Rolled 1 (1d6)

Brendan Nemain always liked birds. Growing up just outside of Boston, he was fascinated with the way they flew, the way they sang, and the way they nested. Chief among his passions was the study of the old tree in the park, a massive old oak filled with crow's nests year round. Brendan would feed the crows breadcrumbs and sketch them as they fed, dreaming of becoming an ornithologist when he was older. He studied dilligently, ready for the day when he could make his passion his career.

Sadly, that day was never to come. One day on his way home from school through the park Brendan was an unfortunate bystander in a drug deal gone wrong, a stray bullet catching him through the lung as he ran for his favorite tree for cover. Bleeding out in the roots, Brendan felt his life begin to fade away.
And then something answered.

His memories are hazy, but he remembers a spirit, a woman or perhaps three, a great black bird, and a kiss upon his lips. When he woke he was crouched over his own dead body, staring through a trio of tiny eyes.

Brendan had been given the power to push his consciousness into bodies with a kiss, and had managed to do so with bird before his own body expired. Now no longer human and terrified beyond belief, Brendan gathered more birds into himself, slowly learning his powers and constantly in need of a rotating population of bodies to prevent them from falling asleep and releasing his control with him still inside. He lives in the alleys of the city now, scared and alone but with a strange and perfect knowledge of the city through his dozen eyes. He stuffs his bodies into a home-made outfit sewn from the refuse of a costume shop, keeping the vague silhouette of a man to not give away his presence.

People have taken to calling him Flock.

[BODY OF CHAINS]

From your body, you can instantly grow chains. You can make them to be wrapped around your body, or shoot out with considerable force, but only in one size (with the same width as your palm). Plus, while they still touch your body, you can "suck" the chains back into your body. Chains are made of unknown material, similar to steel, but much tougher and lighter.
After making a lot of chains, your will feel hungry. Pushing beyond this point without resting will be harmful. After 24 hours, created chains will dissolve into harmless gas that will quickly disappear into the atmosphere.

That's pretty cool, user

I imagine if he ever needs, he could posses a human body for a little while - maybe slipping some bird saliva into their food while they are eating outside

And you could do the Huginn and Muninn thing, where the birds watch over the human loaner body and swap spit before it goes to sleep/passes out.

Heh guys, OP here, I gotta disappear for a while, if anybody feels like it feel free to pick up the power creation

Could you tell us what the rolls and getting dubs/trips mean before you go?

Went out for dinner. You made me feel all special and stuff, but this curse seems demanding of more than a succinct backstory, and provokes some questions -- how powerful are these creatures? Does one make them go away by simply "feeling" differently?

Ex.: I feel a spark of motivation while presently consumed by sloth. Does that make "silent demon" disappear, since I no longer feel compelled to do nothing? If I no longer feel vengeful against someone who has wronged me, does the Hell Hound disappear? If I am no longer covetous, will the Imp cease to steal; if envious, destroy? If I feel a longing for love--genuine, passionate, romantic love--will "Fat Devil" be answering my call? Lust? or does that illicit nothing in response?

If anyone wants to do something with this, please go ahead and do so.I just can't think of anything.

It is a coded message meant for a Mossad agent.

Private sleuth Vera Pravda has a diverse set of clientele, one from our world and from...another.
Hailed as a wackjob conspiracy theorist in ours, Vera is ostracized in society and mocked in the media for her outrageous claims and wild accusations of plots and beings from beyond our own dimension.
All to which only a few know truly exist.
Aptly named by her as The Other, she works as a detective that bridges both worlds to solve mysteries that cross dimensionally, to which she ultimately uncovers a plot that may jeopardize our very existence!

Armed only with her sharp sass, down-to-two-earths attitude and the uncanny ability to interpret text from pure fact or abject fiction, there really is no telling which of which is stranger.

This is among the more artistic/autistic (but mostly artistic) replies I've ever seen.

Nice, user.

Do you think she browses /x/ for fun?

I guess Blue Saver is not all that inspiring. The idea for him was partially based on XIII and the smoke guy from Hellboy

I think he's cool, but his backstory is pretty barebones. Still, the idea of a jellyman in a space suit is pretty rad.

True, I had no idea what to do with him initially but now as I think about him more I kind of want to flesh him out some more if the thread survives into tomorrow

dice+1d6

Put it on the Options field, user.

Rolled 2 (1d6)

Thank you and I'm sorry for new

She browses /x/, only posting in quick, haiku-like bursts of questionable content and legality.

oh hey, this thread is still alive
[KISSBOUND]

By placing your lips on an object you can activate a telekinetic control over that object, able to freely move it with just a thought. You can control up to 5 objects. Your weight limit is about 500 kg for a single object. The lighter it is, the easier and faster you can move it.

[NAGA]

You are half snake, half human. Instead of legs, you have a snake like body, your eyes, fangs and tongue are that of a snake. Your fangs produce venom, that you can mentally alter to be either paralyzing or extremely deadly. Your body is amazingly agile and flexible as well as being much stronger and faster than that of an average human

Rolled 6 (1d6)

I'm game.

also, this is pretty cool user

I left a lot of it for imagination since there were so any moving parts in this one, but I can flesh out the rules if you would like:

1. Once the Demon was created it will exist for 24 hours or until it's role was fulfilled, then it will dissolve into black goo which will eventually evaporate. If after 24 hours your mental has not changed, Demon will reappear from your body once more. You can not make them disappear, nor can you control them.

2. All Devils are stronger than human, and can sustain great amounts of damage. Hell Hound posses super strength, able to flip over a bus. Both Imps are very fast and agile.

3. There is no limit on how many Demons can exist at once

And no, the situation you described does not trigger the power. Gluttony activates when you want to have something beyond reasonable or healthy amounts. Lust activates every time you get overwhelmed by lust - when you can't think of anything else but your primal urges.

[SOUND STAGE]

With a mental command, you can alter hearing of people around you. You can make them hear any kind of sound in the world, as long as you heard it before, including human speech. You can also pick and choose, what real sounds they can hear and which they can't, including making them completely deaf if you want.

You can effect people in a 500 meter radius. You can effect many people at once, but you can only create a single kind of illusion at once - so when you effect several people at the same time, they will all hear the same thing.

Saved the picture, the post, and the inspiration behind it all.

That's good stuff right there.

Rolled 3 (1d6)

Rollan
This is a dang good thread op, you should be proud.

Rolled 4 (1d6)

I hope op is not kill

[GOLDEN SCALES]
You can instantly grow golden scales on your body, covering your skin completely. Edges of the scales are sharp. By default, the scales are aligned with your body, covering it like a second skin. With a mental command you can make them stand out, like quills of a hedgehog and with another you can make them shoot out with great speed or just gently fall of your skin. When you loose a scale however, it takes a couple hours for them to regrow.
Scales separated from your body turn dust an hour later

[DRAGON FISH]
You are half man, half aquatic dragon-like creature. Your body is agile and tough, with several fins and features that make you a perfect swimmer. You can breath underwater, you have a long flexible tail and an ability to breath fire out of your mouth.

Rolled 5 (1d6).
Guide me to glory OP.

Put dice+1d6 in the Options field, user.

[MEMORABILIA]

When you touch a close possession of a person that you know, you are able to perfectly copy any single of their skill or field of knowledge, like drawing skills, great knowledge of math or fighting skill.

By keeping that object with you, you can continue to use that skill. Once you assign a certain skill to a possession, you can only use that possession for that skill. If you want to copy several skills of a single person, you'll have to obtain several of their possessions.

Your body however does not change in any way, so if you let's say copy a martial artist's fighting skill, you'll know how to perform all their moves but might physically not able to

What's the system behind this OP?
