/awg/ Alternative Wargames General

Cute dinosaur knights edition.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or people's homebrew wargames. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

>Examples of games that qualify
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_miniature_wargames
Grimdark Future, Age of Fantasy, Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Ghost Archipelago, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, Freebooter's Fate, Dark Age, Beyond the Gates of Antares, LotR and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).

If you could have models given to you, totally free, to demo a single /awg/ game, what would you pick and why?

For me it'd be World of Twilight. I love the aesthetic and the rules and I think it's a criminally underappreciated little game.

Bump for great justice! How on earth did the last one die so fast?

It ran for over 200 posts I think. We can die in the course of a week, or a day. It all depends on what's going on in the /awg/ world.

When games get new releases we generally have more to discuss.

We can discuss the Harry Potter game coming out, but I imagine it'll drvolve into waifu wars (of which Ginny will obviously win) or bitching about it not being available everywhere (justified bitching, mind).

Disregard waifus, attain esoteric spells.

seriously though, if people can just make their own spells for fightan, you'd think there'd be a lot more variety in fireworks besides everyone using the same curses all day erry day

Gonna veer away from current happenings though, and put forward a question.

What are some super niche wargames out there that you've heard of, or better yet played (yeah I'm that guy)? I've been snooping around, and here's a list of what I got right now that I want to do some batreps on.

>At43 (I've got the two player starter, working on getting a red blok force off a guy in a trade. Questionable if it's going to work out. Never played)
>Anima tactics (Got a bunch of minis of a dude who had them sitting in his attic. Never played.)
>Afterglow (Currently have nothing. Never Played)
>Eden (Currently have nothing, Never played)
>Godslayer (Currently have nothing, Never played)
>Dark Age (Have a fairly sizeable core army, want to pick up a St Isaac force now. Never played)
>MERCS (Have pretty much ever faction. Played 1e, was really fun, looking forward to trying out 2e)
>Relic Knights (Friend got me into this, picked up a large Noh army and a few other small armies. Hated the 1e system, maybe 2e will be better)
>Relic Blade (Got the two player starter and the dark expansion. Got in a few games with it. Great models but there's not nearly enough stuff in the box to justify the cost)
>Bushido (Got into the rise of the kage kickstarter so I've got 2 forces, never played)
>Helldorado (Really need to index my crap, I'm got a fairly large amount of models, certainly enough to make 2 forces, never played)

Was thinking of doing videos over mechwarrior clix because I got like, 3 large tubs of minis for 6 bucks at a swapmeet. Not sure if it really goes along with gaming aesthetic I'm going for though. Also have a bunch of confrontation stuff, but with the KS looming, it's up in the air.

who edits the pastebin? Some user posted the frostgrave expansions a few threads back;

>Dead game general

Fixed. Just buy GW already you contrarian shitposters.

It got past bump limit anyway.

nth for Knight Models is a bunch of idiots.

So no new news?

maybe from recasters.

Games I'm aware of and/or play? Let's see...

Dark Age
Wrath of Kings
World of Twilight
MERCS
Heavy Gear Blitz
Warlord
CAV
Bushido
Open Combat
Cretacia
Warzone
At-43
Confrontation
Chronopia
Robotech
Batman
Kings of War
Deadzone
Deep wars
Wild West Exodus
Dystopian Wars
Firestorm Armada
Freebooter's Fate
Wargods of Aegyptus/Olympus

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. I did reviews for some magazines a few years back so I got exposed to a lot of /awg/ stuff and now will gladly promote it just becayse fuck guys like

Of those I only really play a few because finding people who play them is tricky. I get in some MERCS with Bartosz from time to time (hoping to film a battle report once I put the final touches on my GCC), and there's another atore where the guys play KoW, Deadzone and Batman which is cool.

Some guy about 20 minutes north of me just bought into HGB so we're gonna work on playing in the future. I need to get painting that stuff, too.

In fact the first ever videos I did on YouTube were a learn to play series for AT-43. That game got me back into wargaming after a long hiatus, and I will always be grateful to it.

God I want that to come back.

After getting through a shitposting thread pissed off that Abyssinia is an advanced civilization in an alt history game with dragons and Deep Ones, those snoodle dino mounts cheered me up. Thank you.

Noice list, there's some there I own and forgot about, namely HGB (got a bunch of the old metal models, including the mammoth) and Wrath of Kings (spent...a lot during the CMON liquidation purge).

Also to add to the list, there's Carnivale and Arena Rex (which is a lot of fun)

I don't really expect to find local people to play these games with. Maybe my channel will explode in popularity, and I can meet /awg/ bros at larger cons to get in some ultra niche gaming.

Whatever happened with Wargods?

Whats some good and cheap places to get 28mm heads and bits?
I live in America.

Always glad to help!

Carnevale! Yes! I have the first edition rules and loved them. So cinematic.

Never played Arena Rex, but it looked cool and the models are gorgeous.

Let me know when your channel goes up and I will gladly check it out and maybe give ya some plugs on mine. Always glad to support more channels that aren't just pandering to the 40k crowd.

>After getting through a shitposting thread
>look for this thread because I wanna read more discussion about ToS
>Actual thread has maybe 8 posts about the game
>150 posts of people being edgy racists baiting people into retarded arguments

My curiosity has burned me once again.

Yeah, I jumped in because I thought it could be salvaged into a TOS thread.

Nope.

Aegyptus is still around, Olympus has some models out and book ia in production. I'm waiting for that damn book. Have been for like three years now.

I really think it would benefit more from being a skirmish game, with your warband leader being a chosen of whatever god and then everyone else still being the cool children of the gods thing so you could still have jackal headed warbands of Anubis and shit.

Hopefully I'll have something for to throw up early september. Moving to a permanent location mid August, so until then I can't really do anything.

Channel currently exists, but it's pretty much a skeleton and 2 videos that served as seeing how the camera looked more than anything else.

I get that. I move last August and I only just now am getting around to filming again.

I look forward to it, though!

>Helldorado
The feels... It started raining on my face all of a sudden.

As of niche games, I'd add for the moment, and I'm sure I'll add more as I remember them:

Broken Legions (played, own several warbands)
Project Z (own, never played)
Judge Dredd (Mongoose, own something, never played)
Celtos (neither own nor played)
Urban War (have very little, never played)
Saga (because it basically is, have some warbands, played the shit out of it for a while, now it seems interest died while waiting for 2ed)

Saga is a solid game, I wanna get into it but I figure I should at least knock out some of the stuff I have already before I do.

I liked the Judge Dredd rules Mongooae put out, but never got to really play it.

Currently rereading the old Cry Havoc magazines.

Attached: Cynwall_army.jpg (3543x2362, 6.88M)

Aha! forgot about Dredd! I'll need to pick up a fattie army. That concept was just waaaay to prophetic not to showcase.

Also forgot to add spectre operations. Although...I don't really want to dabble in too many of those mini neutral systems out there. They're pretty dime a dozen.

Well, if you happen to have some LOTR miniatures available, why don't you try some Saga with Tolkien-inspired battleboards?

I do have a bunch, actually. I even debated trying the new edition out and proxying with some Rohan stuff.

Is it already out? I thought they just announced it.

It came out like a week or two ago I think.

There were some guys playing at one of my LGS' two weeks ago, and another had the books for sale.

Some of the painting tutorials in these are ace. What would be even better if I had the dedication would be to follow the awesome terrain tutorials. it's amazing what you can do with some foam and popsicle sticks.

Cold War Mechanon here

My small project is growing well, currently my NATO force has 32 infantry painted plus a bunch of HMGs, ATGMs, MPAA and mortars, plus 2 supertech Abrams (in fluff they're refitted with gauss cannons and rocket pods), a Cobra gunship and my first mech.

On the painting table is 16 more riflemen, 2 more HMGs, 2 Platoon Command stands, another mech (with a huge beam rifle) and a third Abrams.

Then I need to buy a box of Humvees and a box of M113s.

Then I can begin on the "UEB" (United Eastern Bloc - WarPac) side. A box of PSC Soviets, a box of T-55s, one of T-72s, and glorious BMPs. Maybe also Shilkas, and a Hind D(?!)

Attached: IMG_20180312_005055.jpg (2048x1152, 378K)

>>Relic Knights (Friend got me into this, picked up a large Noh army and a few other small armies. Hated the 1e system, maybe 2e will be better)
I've been involved in the 2e playtesting, and while they've gone up and down and through some pretty extreme changes(including at least 1 almost total rewrite) 2e is going to be a much better game than 1st edition ever was. And now for my own contributions to the list of obscure games.

Celtos(Going to get into this after I've finished painting my Warzone, Relic Knights, and WHFB projects)
No Limits(great little independent sci-fi wargame, alt activation's and using d10s, customizable unit and faction building rules, mini agnostic. There's even a fantasy version)
Huh, I don't have anything else to really add to this. Shit.

They did a kickstarter for Olympus, was pretty successful too, there's whole bunch of factions up in the store for that game now. Shit was over and done when I found out about it though.

Looking good!

Check out Rebel Minis for their Media V tank. It'd be a cool high tech looking tank for ya.

Yeah, I was a backer. Only went in for the book, and I'm still waiting.

GWAR Rumble In Antarctica

It's as if some people manage to play both and not be a little bitch about it.

>If you could have models given to you, totally free, to demo a single /awg/ game, what would you pick and why?

Witchfinder General. A little skirmish game with English folkloric elements set in circa 1600s. You are the eponymous Witchfinder General, opponents are witches, warlocks, barghests, black dogs, werewolves, devils, Spring-heeled Jacks, etc as well as other humans. I do wish it were better organized and revamped/expanded though.

>Witchfinder General
Is it a board game? Sounds interesting.

No, as we know the first rule of wargaming is that you must pledge yourself to a single company, shun all other games made by other companies and never get a demo by using weak excuses like "I already play game A."

Nah miniatures skirmish game. dashingdicegames.co.uk/

Honestly user, this shit is pretty neato.

If it wasn't for the scale (you're 15mm, right?), I would suggest using some starship troopers miniatures.

I hope they re-release them with some new shit once the non-satire movie comes out.

Where are you user? If you aren't enthused by the mechwarrior stuff I'll take those bins off your hands for 12 bucks.

Huh, neat. How does it play? Looks like it could be interesting. Can you play as the monsters, or are players always limited to playing Witchfinders?

Dark Age is a fucking good game now. It's better balanced and more fun than WM/H is these days, and is a better spiritual successor IMO. Thew huge difference in factions AND the small required buy in are really appealing.
I have Outcasts and CORE.

Easily one of the best games on the market. Amazing rules, good balance, sweet models.

Only thing holding it back is how hard it is to get.

Two most obscure things I could think of:

Starship Troopers (Mongoose) based (at least aesthetically) off the 1-season cgi children's show from the early 2000s; i have a starter box set, never played

The Shadowrun Action Figure Tabletop Wargame, I think I tried to play as a kid and couldn't work it out but I still have my orc lying around somewhere

>The Shadowrun Action Figure Tabletop Wargame
Oh man, I remember that shit. Never played, but always thought some of the pieces looked awesome. I wonder if I could find any for a decent price on eBay.

I used to see them at my local game shop when I was in high school, looked dank but I didn't really care enough to get some of them. 40K at the time had its hooks into me, and deep.

>Deep wars

What do you play?

Or one of the games I play, although I want do. I probably should have differentiated in my post.

Jesus fuck I can't type tonight.

Not one of the games I play, but I want to.

Has anyone played No Limits? I'm looking for the best rules for my Weird WW3 stuff and am currently between Quadrant 13, Stargrunt, No Limits or the playtest rules of Foreign Stars.

Ideally I want rules for about 40-50 infantry plus 3-10 vehicles a side (tank platoon, transports or humvees, specialist vehicle like a mech or SPAA).

I've done a solo game against myself once, what do you want to know?

How does it play and what sort of size forces does it handle, mostly.

Also the Pacific Rim KS is live and it's a bit shit.

35 bong pounds for a whole 2 prepainted minis in the starter box, 65 pounds for the deluxe version with 4 minis.

Miniatures are 20 pounds each, and locked behind stretch goals.

Ahaha. Jesus, what are they thinking?

Perhaps I am more autistic than usual, but where do you GET the Cretacea rules? After the Dinosaur WArgame thread, I want to play me some dino stompin' good times.

As far as I'm concerned they went out of business in 2015. I haven't bought a thing from them since 2014

Should dwarves always have steampunk roots?

No. Or maybe yes, if you want to go with it being part of the definition of dwarf rather than just some form of "underground short bearded stout things"

I need ant-like, necromancy-based "dwarves" that swarm around underground, pillage graveyards to reanimate them, and do all sorts of weird shit.

The absolute madmen.

What are some people’s favourite 6mm power armour minis?
I like bulbous and top-heavy styles, so I’ve ordered a set of Brigade’s, but I need some for the other side.

I love how much deformed and grotesque they are. Fucking tanks with legs.

Quads doesn't make you right, faggot.

Buy GW when they provide the miniatures, terrain, or accessories you want, at a price you are willing to pay. This may be rare, but it does happen! You don't have to buy GW at other times. You also don't have to use their rules, unless you want to, or use only GW products, unless you want to.

Completely ignoring GW is fine, but you may occasionally miss out on something neat.

They don't make historical games anymore, so I don't really miss out on anything. They had some decent stuff in their historical lineup, but of course they had to fuck it up.

Also, tried the slightly interesting stuff. You know what was good? War of the Ring. Basic SBG rules are fine, but Rebellion does it better. Shadow War seemed interesting, turned out bland.

Occasionally stuff might seem interesting, but my interest fades in shorter time than they had Over The Top in production.

Thankfully the Chinese take care of my GW needs for me. With some models they can be even cheaper than Mantic.

Would anyone here be interested in Youtube battle reports for Dystopian Wars?

Yes, more non-GW stuff is always welcome

Anyone have the rules for Wolsung?

paintplayenjoy.co.uk/cretacea.html

Last neat thing GW did was LotR. Their more recent models have either been oversized or just downright ugly.

Dystopian Wars in general is always welcome. I can't wait for the reboot / relaunch. Hopefully Warcradle won't be as skitzo with their development and design as Spartan Games was.

What models are these?

For me GW in some weird spot between styles. For example with 40k on one hand they no longer push their minis in this gothic/Heavy Metal style and on the other they are not really futuristic.

jesus christ, speaking of ridiculous prices, I went to poundland and those tubs that used to have 100 shitty plastic soldiers, but then went down to 80?

yeah.

70 now.

Confrontation Cynwall Elves.

I mean, what madness will we reach next? 2p per figure? That's an unsustainable rip-off.

Absolutely shocking, they’ve lost my custom, just like the baguette shop that now charges £1.20 instead of £1. Pushing me right back into gw’s arms.

Second mech done, base is currently unfinished as I wait for my 1:100 pilot figures to arrive.

For all I praise the WHISPER stuff, these arms were a fucking nightmare to line up and still look a bit awkward from some angles.

And a pic of the two suits together.

It's bad when Monsterpocalypse is also around the corner. A legitimately good (if not great) game, coming up for reboot.

They need to just know math. Spartan in 10 years never figured out fucking math, and why the 'degrade 1 dice per hit' or boarding systems were just dumb.

Nice. I love how they have a sort of Appleseed/Eureka 7 style to them.

Boarding did nothing wrong.

Hey, hope you're still lurking. No Limits plays with an alternating activation sequence like with warzone, at a level that can be comfortably called "platoon scale conflict". It could be taken up to a company level of play, but the game is also very granular, so if you want that be prepared to sink the rest of the day into it. Resolutions are conducted with d10s trying to match or eceed to targrt number needed +/- modifiers as applicable. Its been quite some time since I played with the system, so things are rather rusty for me. Hope this helped, if even just a little.

Curious, are you buying the 1/100 scale gundam kits to get the pilot or is there some way you’re ordering just the pilots? And nice work on the Whisper holding the railgun (I think that was what it was supposed to be?) that thing broke me and I just ended up having to use greenstuff to get it to stay.

Am I the only one who would love to see a Phantasm model for BMG? Maybe not as one of the TAS models (while my nostalgia loves them they do clash hard with the rest of the range) but something a little updated?

I think ahe's be a bad-ads free agent. No idea who would be able to take her, though. Man I need to watch that movie again.

The Phantasm would be pretty cool to see, although I feel like she'd be pretty similar to Reaper in terms of rules. I'd probably have her as a cheaper, but inferior, version of Reaper (less endurance, no combo on the attack) but with affiliate unknown, rivals Brave and the Bold

I would imagine she'd have some sort of smoke bombs, maybe higher movement and lower endurance. Obviously no combo, as you said, but possibly martial artist?

I think she could be different enough from Reaper if they tried.

I'm also hoping we maybe get a resin Black Canary soon.

So this is going to be a lengthy post with 3 questions. I'm an old WHFB player with a fair amount of Dwarfs, which I'm happy using in WHFB & AoS, but I'd be interested in other games

First, besides Kings of War and Dragon Rampant, what other fantasy wargames are there to have my Dwarfs in?

Second, I'm kinda interested in KoW. What's a good points value to aim for in building an army? The rulebook suggested 2,000 points, would that a good starting point, or should I start lower?

Finally, I've made a Dwarf warband for Dragon Rampant. It's based off of the warband rules towards the back, which I know is only a suggestion, but it's a good starting point. So rip this to shreds I guess

24 Points
>Lord: Elite Foot (6 Strength) [8 points]
*Fear
>Housecarls: Elite Foot (12 Strength) [6 points]
>Axe Thanes: Heavy Foot (12 Strength) [6 points]
*Offensive
>Quarrel Thralls: Heavy Missiles (12 Strength) [4 points]

Attached: beards.png (340x388, 300K)

For Kings of War a starting point value would be at about 1000 points. It's what the group I play with uses for our slow grow leagues. Local tournaments at least go to 2250, as they are faster than 2500pt games while still giving you plenty of room to bring al your toys.

so relatively similar to Warhammer then, which makes sense. What are some things to look out for and try to include? Like is it more infantry based, magic based, warmachine based?

I can see that working, making her faster but more fragile. Having smoke bombs is nothing game breaking either, because you can get it on a cheaper platform already in the smoke prisoner

On resin Canary, I'd love that. I already play Birds of Prey fairly often, and Canary is always my boss, so another option to lead is more than welcome. If it's Rebirth biker jacket even more so, that design is awesome

You don't need to rely on warmachines and artillery, though the new named steel behemoth is pretty good. I would go for Brock Riders, as they happen to be among the best cavalry in the game and can really help you determine how engagements play out. I have found taking some rangers+Herneas is pretty fun, as you can put out a surprising amount of hurt with them.

OK, I'll keep that in mind

you wouldn't by any chance have a scan for the rangers & Herneas? I checked the website and the links at the top, they're not in the rulebook shared or on the website

I am pretty sure that they are in the core book (Not the free army list just to note). Here is a link to the Easy Army page which has all the units kow2.easyarmy.com/clash-of-kings-2018.aspx
Do note that the new Herneas formation lets you take two regiments of his merry men rather than just one.

As for the second question, not sure.

Here's how 86 or so models break down in Kings of War for me.

40 Shieldbreakers with Musician and Standard 245
20 Ironwatch: 130
20 Bulwarkers:125
Cannon: 85
Dwarf Lord: 130

Total: 715.

1000 points to me seems to be a good size. That allows for either another regiment of something special, two more war machines, another special character, etc on top of those models.

The Dragon Rampant list looks fine to me.

Also by splitting the units up into troops, I managed to boost that army there to 1000 points.

>Rebirth Black Canary
>Checks Google
Hit damn, I'd buy one! And a Rebirth Green Arrow. I like the touches of bronze.

I really need to buy and read some of the Rebirth stuff.

Kings of War for big armies, Open Combat or Dragon Rampant for skirmish (or KoW Vangaurd).

Thanks for all the advice, I'll keep that in mind

Follow up question, what are the more popular alternative wargames in your areas, and what's their strong points?
