Ulisses-Spiel, very well known in Germany. It's set post Gathering Storm, uses a Shadowrun-esque D6 dice pool, and is a unified line with Marines, Humans, and Xenos all playable in the core book.

Book Repositories (If you're planning to download any Rogue Trader materials, read the .txt file in the RT directory)

I'm starting my first Rogue Trader campaign at 1st rank, and so far my players are playing

A rogue trader
An arch militant
An astropath
A missionary
An Explorator

I'm putting them on a Hive World where they gotta impress a guy who is holding the Rogue Trader's ship and Warrant of Trade.

What are some quests/challenges/trials that I could come up with on a Hive World that would ease my PCs into 40k/Rogue Trader. So far I've come up with them being tasked to teach a local gang a lesson, with how being up to them. Another idea is being hunting down beasts and mutants deep in the underhive along with doing social combat against some nobles in the upperhives.

Thoughts?

Give them some actual buisness tasks. Force them to set up a trade or something. Your players aren't random mooks.

Alright. What about setting up trade agreements?

What are some things 1st rank Rogue Trader parties do, I'm not really sure what they would be doing at a low level.

Adventuring on derelict vessels, trading with eldar. Fucking up rogue planets with orbital lazers.

Are you sure that's shit they would be doing at 1st rank?

Also, are there books about Hive cities for any of the 40k RPGs?

It's Rogue Trader, that's shit they're *supposed* to start doing at rank 1.

It's a fucking rogue trader. If you wanted something down to earth at rank 1 you picked the wrong game.

What tools do you use to create maps for your games?

Just checking since I've never played Rogue Trader before and was thrown into the GMing chair.

MS paint, Hexographer, and good old pen and paper.

What's the best way to judge if an encounter might be too much for the PCs?

Alright, as a first mission, how about my PCs and their fleet arrive at a Hive World that hasn't made contact for a while and after receiving his Warrant the Rogue Trader has to make a stately visit and make sure nothing fishy is going on.

The Rogue Trader going to make visits with the nobles and more or less engaging in social combat against nobles all the while probing to see if they're not making backroom deals with heretics and xenos.

All the being presented with opportunities to make trade deals and explore lost Hive Cities for loot.

why have there been so many jojo ops to these threads recently

This just reads like a dark heresy blub.

Yeah, what said. Why is a Rogue Trader concerned with "fishy" things going on? They're barely beholden to the Imperium. Is he trying to blackmail the nobles with the information or get a cut? Does he owe a favor to an Inquisitor or something?

More or less after receiving his Warrant of Trade, the powers that be nicely "asked" the Rogue Trader to make a pit stop near a planet that they had some difficulty

Got the idea from the core rulebook for some sample quests for starting out a Rogue Trader campaign.

Level 1 RT characters are roughly equivalent to Lvl 5 DH (1e) characters...

I'm not sure Rogue Trader is the game you want to run. At the very least this premise should only last a couple of sessions, to give some focus to the first adventure while you start dropping plot hooks for them to follow. Rogue Trader is about going exploring beyond the borders of the Imperium, chasing after myths and legends, founding colonies, or bringing lost human colonies back into the Imperium and trading with xenos. Remember that even the most destitute starting party has an immensely wealthy Dynasty behind them and a city sized Voidship with a crew numbering in the tens of thousands of people.

If you do want to use this idea, rather than use a Hive world, use a colonial world in the expanse. They still have large populations and a ruling noble elite, but there aren't any (known) living Hive Worlds in the Expanse. Perhaps it is a condition of the Warrant to ensure that said world provides it's tithe every 50 years or so. I'd also suggest starting the game within the Imperium at Port Wander, and actually have to travel to the world in question. That gives you an opportunity to drop plot hooks the players can follow up later after they're finished with the investigation on the world.

I expect it to last 1-2 sessions, 3 at most. The mission that is. I'm just doing it to let them get a feel for the game and let them try out skills and shit before we go to full blown sandbox mode.

If it's combat, check how often attacks will invalidate armor.
If a pc in guard flak, with some cover, can't soak an attack on a damage dice roll of =>4, it may be veering on too much.
Snipers and psykers are force multipliers

Thanks.

Adding to this, do not be afraid to stack things against the players, especially if it fits the mood and scene.
