in a cyoa based on an established setting, should options and abilities draw as heavily upon the source as possible or should they be more focused around balance and interesting choices?

Post settings and ideas you want to see made into CYOAs but never did.

Surely you're using an established setting for a reason. So you should try to have both choices that have a reason to exist and are part of the appeal of the setting and balance them as well.

I did, I think the setting is neat and offers plenty of cool opportunities

however, the pre-existing magic in the setting is poorly categorized and hard to get into a "cyoa friendly" format

I choose C. Speed limit is 60, so a car should be able to avoid squishing me in time, and it has lights, so less chance of getting lost/slipping.

Now this is all for my merchant scheme, a good looking, charismactic guy who for whatever reason never seems to get sick.

Consider leaving some options open. Instead of giving the option to attain a certain kind of magic, offer a map that leads to a tower of magi, or a mystic library, or something like that.

there are three main "ability" sections, skills (martial arts/physical capability/fighting)- magic (your spells) and items (money stuff, so hired help, guns and all that stuff)

the first and last are easy enough, the second is an issue for the reason previously explained

Careful, you'd be right at the literal thick of things. Those events often have hundreds of people squeezed pretty tightly, if they all suddenly get 300 pounds you might not be able to escape and could quite literally find yourself crushed to death (especially if each resultant landwhale is after you)

I don't think it's possible to lose 250 pounds like that. By the time you look like the girl in the picture you're pretty much beyond help, since you've fucked every aspect of your physiology so badly that exercise is effectively impossible, eating less is a nightmare of nutrient management and starving yourself would end up causing far too many health problems. All that's besides the point in his scenario, of course, since this is a feminist rally and as he himself pointed out these are specifically women who make a point of opposing weight loss for political/ideological purposes.

Many PDFs are lacking in what the majority are partly drawn by: graphic design. And if they do have images, due to the nature of PDFs, they're of dubious quality. As well, most people don't want to sit there and simply read what the author is trying to convey. And a good amount of PDFs may be smaller in filesize but have a lot of pages of words to scroll through. If you aren't interested in the subject matter there's little reason to go through them at all.

Being a PDF, or even a text based CYOA, doesn't automatically fail presentation though. And Gilded Cage got a ton of responses despite being both.
