Not this Grognard, I was there for the big D&D boom of '81-'83 when it seemed like everyone played tabletop. I was also there for the swift collapse into "that nerd game" oblivion, where I had to play with B.O. guy and creepy mumbler who always makes little girl characters and fuckers like that, and eventually watch the hobby get taken over by "muh build" autists despite a brief upswing in hot goth chicks playing Vampire in the 90s.
Now there's a chance things'll improve again, and I'm all for it. Most of my best tabletop experiences over the years have been with "normies." If they have to placate the pronoun retards to make it acceptable to the public, I really don't give two shits.

There is nothing wrong with this. My Roommate in college loved Madden and CoD. It's a simple fun game meant for mass enjoyment and it turns a profit. There are still good video games being made, and although you might have been too young to remember, videogames have always been a cash grab. For every Metriod Prime or Halo Combat evolved, you had Tarzan or Jaws Unleashed. We just remember the good games and thing that they specifically were more handcrafted and loved back then.

Untrue, either. When talking about video games, I can list sever, even popular games made with love in this modern era, much like the both overrated and loathed by /v/ Undertale. In terms of TTRPGs The love is there, more so than ever. Nowadays we've got so many things and details we couldn't put into our games. Just the advent of Roll 20 is crazy to me. The most important aspect is that games are inherently personal. If a game doesn't have love, that's because of the DM. If you are using D&D as an example, they give you so many details, worlds, and ideas, and say "Do what you want with it". There's no excuse for having a bad game of 5e.

This is something that I think I can understand. There are several major reasons for it. The first is the Seinfeld/Shakespeare effect. To most people in our day and age, Seifeld and Shakespeare are absolutely boring. This is because every single piece of media and narrative framework borrows heavily from this. By the time we see Romeo and Juliet, the idea of star crossed lovers is already dry.

The second reason would be the idea of progression vs. tradition. If 5e was the same as 2e, why even bother making it? If it's too different, people complain. If you bring something back like electrum pieces, people complain. There will never be a game good enough for people. The most you can hope for is that it's like a musician albums, where two are great but different, even if you don't like the rest.

The third would be that many haven't experienced this stuff in their life. Many people getting into 5e had no idea what Ravenloft was, and never would if they didn't bring it back. Ravenloft is still a fantastic setting, and I would like anyone who plays D&D to experience it. There's no need to say "Sorry pal, you missed the bus. Should have been born sooner and have been a misanthropic ape like myself back in highschool".
Popular franchises that kicked off very well, and of those franchises some of the most popular and well made in the series. Should I have said Pong and Tetris to avoid getting your cheeks red?

After that starts getting saturated the oddballs and people trying to get ahead of the curve will look for old ideas that worked and push them out because they worked, and the thing is on some level they'll work again with a fresh coat of paint and there is a generation of people who haven't had it be a saturated stream aimed at them. To be frankly honest its been downhill since the first traditional game players in the role playing/war game sense just because of how society is falling into lazy ideas.

You had to actually learn the game either by reading the book or interacting with people and you only got fantasy ideas from reading books, and books are hard to read unless you're motivated to do so. Fast forward and people are getting their fantasy ideas from people who used to play D&D, later we got video games which popularized the ideas in RPGs and tactical games which may have gotten more people interested which seems great. Fast forward to now and you have people learning to play from podcasts, youtube videos, and understanding RPG mechanics from "retro" ps2 JRPG and coming off with some processed shit on how games should work from things that are not table top games. They basically have ADHD and can't stop checking their phone for more than 10 minutes and have an expectation that playing the game will be entertaining and no work really has to be put into it like their video games or shows.

Not to do a whole "this generation is shit"plenty of people my age have become attached to their cellphone to check facebook and twitter but its more with actual investment. There is no more work from these people than learning the thing exists doing what amounts to common internet obsession cycle where they spend a few hours looking up something they just learned about and expecting magic to happen. We're stuck with people putting in less effort and considering the results great because they don't know any better and its sad, it's like some high school students deciding to form a track club because there isn't one and coming to a consensus that as long as they're speed walking fasting than other people they're doing track stuff and may fully well know you can do this running thing but that's only for strange/old/try hard people that don't "Really" know what track is about.

Same thing with stats. If you want to swim in rapid water, roll an athletics check instead of a swim check. DM makes up a number and decides the consequences regardless. Your options aren't any more limited.
