I've followed CFB for many years now, and I've always been curious about the intricacies and drama that goes on behind closed doors. I've heard stories about extremely toxic behavior by certain pros, who continue to get official representation from Wizard of the Coast.
Anyone able to "spill the beans" on CFB or SCG?

I have some limited experience with them... and they're generally the same sort of shitty people who play American e-Sports: fun to watch, but don't expect to enjoy drinking with one.

Met Owen at an event once in a game. He is a better player than I am so he obviously won the game, but it was not an enjoyable experience. Dude was terse, clipped, and very tense. It wasn't a great experience. We exchanged like 5 words other than game info, not even a "good game" or "thanks for playing". I offered, he didn't take me up on it.

The single thing about the "pro" scene that really colored them as shit was as follows:

>spoiler season is long as fuck and tons of talk goes around about breaking the meta
>set drop and big event schedule means the first big event with the cards will be some huuuuuge event, not just some SCG GP grind, it becomes a big deal in the community
>both websites talk down on mono U devotion and promote decks that have a weak match up against it
>pros show up with nothing but mono U, like some sort of secret society
>crush the event in spectacular fashion
They always sit in a precarious position of providing info on the game to make you better and being pros themselves. They let their greed get the better of them as a group and decided to sack a pro tour size event and spike it by using their clout in the community to mislead their readers/watchers.
Beside that, the real real big dogs have too tight of a relationship with WotC proper and it creates a weird in-club within a subculture built on in-clubs. Its just weird power struggles if you follow them enough. Alot of kow towing, alot of passive aggressiveness, and to the common player, terrible instances of bad behavior being excused or ignored because the problem person or group is protected (then the common player gets blown out or dq'd for similar shit).
You're right about the theros devotion deck fiasco, I had almost forgotten that.
The relationship between these retailer/strategy sites and Wizards seems really sick and unhealthy to me. Bad behavior and even outright cheating gets handwaved. But Wizards will come down like the hand of god on players who aren't part of the in crowd.

EFro is generally known to be an awful human being. He looks at everyone like they're below him and all he does is brag. As obnoxious in real life as he is on social media honestly. For the most part the rest of them are just a bit socially awkward, they don't do the hanging out thing, they just want to play their MtG and go.
Channel Fireball are ripoff artists with a dying monopoly. Less and less people go out to GPs because the ONLY draw is playing MtG competitively. It's not very social, it costs a lot, it costs a lot to have a competitive deck, and you're just there to get shilled to. LGS is where it's at and LGS competition is a different world, you can actually play meme shit and have fun with regular people.

Friend of mine washed out early from an event (wanna say it was a GP?) during Innistrad. His pool was kinda weird, so he went around asking every pro player he could find how they would have built it, including several CFB guys. They were nice. We ran down the list afterwards and agreed LSV's advice was the best.

I think that LSV is an exception to the "scumbag pro" trope. He does tons of various commentary and tech that he then demonstrates, such as the vinage cubes which he frequently won by following the same advice he gave Ayers and modifying said advice as he got more familiar with the format. Also, Gabby left someone for him so he can't be a dick in person.

I do know a few regional judges who are chill. We do EDH over beers sometimes when we're not all doing our 'real jobs'. As for 'pro players', I've only actually met Tomoharu Saito and Nakamura Shuhei in passing. Saito seems like an okay dude when he's not gaming the rules, and Shuhei's pleasant enough. Looked exactly like his hall of fame induction pic, goofy grin included. At all times.

I think you're reading too much into it. Gaby likes magic and probably just felt out of place playing that format with people she doesn't know well. The nature of the show also requires a lot of weird overacting and I doubt she's an actor so it comes off as unnatural. I've met PVDM a few times and he is a pretty nice guy. Most Brazilian mtg players are surprisingly decent dudes. Hell, having played magic both in South America and the first world I have the impression South American mtg scenes are much less autistic. I guess they compensate the fact their country is a shithole with being outgoing and friendly or something.
I've met a couple of pro-tour type people in Australia. They've all been positive and friendly but with kind of in your face attitudes that I'm sure half the people they meet hate. None of them were e celebrities though.
