Dogs have been comrades in arms with humans throughout history as much as horses - but there are none in 40k (Space Wolves need not apply). How come there isn't a single Imperial Guard regiment that uses heavy focus on military dogs as a part of their theme? I think this would be really cool and has good roleplaying potential.
I mean, Rough Riders have badass mutant horse breeds, why there isn't a single badass dog breed? Too bright for the grim darkness of the far future?
>What kind of "stock warrior culture but in space" would K-9 handler Guardsmen be?
The Belgians of all people had this really weird idea around World War One that dogs were the perfect animal for dragging their heavy machine guns. I don't know how well it worked (the Belgians got stomped pretty quickly by the Germans), but it would be a fun diorama for a heavy weapon crew.
Actually reminded me of Tom Hardy in Taboo. Should we roll up a regiment then?

Fuck yeah we should. Special equipment: Doggos
>The dogs used to pull the machine guns were Belgian Mastiffs, this strong breed were more than capable of drawing the 60lbs weight of a Maxim gun. At the time it was not uncommon for dogs to be used as pack animals in Belgium as they offered an efficient and economical alternative to expensive horses. The dogs were able to pull the machine gun carriages that also carried some of the gun’s ammunition, weighing up to 200lbs, for long distances. They were quite capable of keeping up a 4 or 5 mile per hour pace over a long distance on a good road. The relatively cheap cost of pack dogs compared to horses, along with their relative lack of maintenance - with no need for horse shoes etc, made the dogs an excellent option. They also offered a much lower profile than that of a pack horse, allowing them to stay close to the guns ready to move under cover when in action, and were much easier to handle without the need for specially trained troops. >historicalfirearms.info/post/44563322275/belgian-machine-gun-dogs-at-the-beginning-of-the/embed
But these are soulless machines. I'm talking about gene engineered breeds for various circumstances that are perfectly loyal and raise moral throughout the regiment - I mean who doesn't love a dog, especially if you bond with it.
Not to mention how grim of a moment it is when you actully lose your dog...

>Veeky Forums is one person I know that "Anonymous" next to all the posts might be freaking you out but if you just exercise some critical thinking you'll get the hang of it.

>cybernetically enhanced I mean, obviously. It's 40k, it's a cybernetic "dog servitor." But it's a metal robot. OP wanted honest to goodness doggos a la the horses that the Guard use.

>on the internet, no one can tell when you're ignorant
Isn't it grand?
Anyhow, thread answered. Yes: there are 40k dogs. No: they aren't robots. Yes: they even have models and rules.
Adrian Watson
Real doggos are shit, fuck em, they're wholy civilian.
Cyber doggos are the only doggos suitable for war.
>"Hey, the Guard should have more dogs like they do horses." >"That's a cool idea. We could base them on World War I Belgium." >"Should we roll up a regiment?" >No >There's something vaguely reminiscent of that in canon >Thread answered
Why do people like you go on Veeky Forums, anyway?

Rolled 5 (1d10)
Rolling up a regiment is great, just takes people time to get the thread going and get everyone in the right mood.
Many cultures used excellent dog breeds in the place of domesticated megafauna and beasts of burden. Now what's the limiter on our native planet, invasive and uncontrollable grox and squigs ate everything? Space and supply concerns in Hive domes? Use of the mutant-hound's superhuman senses in the rad-soaked or pheromone-blasted environment?
Imagine having a doggo that can sniff out psychics, blanks, orc spores, genestealers or chaos taint. That has a saliva that can heal your wounds by licking or ears like fennec with superhearing. That can be fed specific concotions and piss not just to mark specific points but to spread chemical agents that hinder tyranid colonies if they find sight of then while scouting. An upgraded tail that they can use as a manipulatory organ and hipersonic bark to "silently" communicate with other dogs/dog handlers. Night vision and other shenanigans. There's a lot we could work with here.
Also just imagine the sight of fiercly loyal doggo, brave beyond imagining jumping into the fray to rescue or protect guardsman from whatever horrors may be upon then.
I really like the belgian theme for heavy weapon carrying and would add the rescue dogs that can carry alcohol or medicine would also fit the theme.
Just look at this guardsmen, how sad he is without a doggo. I'm all up for rolling a regiment.
Got distracted. Got jungle. That doesn't really fit.
Here's an idea: It's not a traditional jungle, but more like the Black Forest. A huge, fairy-tale place where people get lost, taken by the warp-fey or worse. So they keep dogs, which are known to be able to sense warp creatures in an instinctive way that no human or instrument can. Over time the dogs become culturally significant enough to be taken along in combat as scouts, gun-bearers, rescue dogs etc.
>armored The Belgians were actually early armored warfare pioneers, deploying armored cars early in World War I. Perhaps they've got a fast attack theme, with light armored cars supplemented by fast bicycle infantry and assault troops teamed with dogs.
PDF All male Conscription Jungle (black forest) Imperial world Armored units (armored cars) Ranged combat specialists Adherent in loyalty For the Homeworld! Imperial Guard allies (Praetorians) Orks as enemies.
Pretty sweet all in all.
Other good ideas include bikes as fast attack (motorcycles?) and anti-tank dogs.
