why are the fighters we see during the dominion war armed with phasers/disruptors?

shouldn't their designers know they'll be facing capital ships and make them flying shield generators surrounding a torpedo launcher?

while we're at it, how big is a bird of prey? how big is a jem'hadar fighter? why does the bridge of the rotarran look like a fiction-accurate starship bridge but the bridge of Gowron's flagship during the Klingon civil war looked like four guys cosplaying in their garage and Michael Dorn wishing he'd changed agents before saying he'd accept a fan commission?

If you're talking about Jem'Hadar attack ships, they're about the same size as the Defiant, maybe a bit smaller.

That's much more a matter of contention. There's 2 seperate classes of BoP, in theory. The K'Vort and the B'rel class. The K'Vort is a large cruiser, mostly seen in TNG with an estimated crew compliment of between 2-300. While the B'rel is a small attack ship, as seen in DS9 and the movies, that varies wildly in size. It goes from being not much bigger than a runabout to being almost twice the size of the Defiant.
Best explanation i can offer for that is that the Klingon Empire doesn't implement a single standardised design doctrine and the size/armament of a house's ships is entirely dependent on what rescources they're willing to put into ship building. So abig house, like Gowron or Duras would have state of the art ships while some weaker house, like Mokai, would have to make do with smaller, shabbier models.

It's been established that torpedoes are much less effective against shields. While phasers and disruptors aren't as destructive as torpedoes, they're good all-rounder weapons.

I really don't like the short, stubby stardrive section, though that's a criticism I'd have of the actual Vengeance too.

I have a few guesses, which may or may not be independent:
-Shields don't scale down well: so quadrupling your shield power will only let you survive three hits instead of two.
-Shields don't scale up well, so the shields on a small ship aren't actually that much weaker than on a big ship, so a fighter-scale phaser isn't much less effective than a starship-scale phaser.
-The situation is such that Offense >>>> Defense, so having significantly stronger shields, at the expense of stronger energy weapons, is pointless.
-Fighter phasers aren't really any weaker that starship phasers, they just have fewer of them.
-The amount of torps they could hold wouldn't be significantly increased by the space savings from not having energy weapons.
-The fighters aren't actually meant for what they're doing, but Starfleet figured they worked well enough against the way the Dominion fought (ie, lots of smaller warships vs. the AQ method of large-ship battles) that it was worth using them in the war.

For the DS9 one they took all the suck and bundled it in a painfully long walking section on the outside of the station's hull. Seriously, if I have these maneuvering thrusters in my suit, why am I stuck walking everywhere like a 90 year old geezer? And then, because that wasn't enough, right at the end they put it a totally superfluous section that crashes three out of four times and forces you to replay the whole thing from the start.

It'd be the part where you jump from the outer rings unto the exterior of the promenade ring. The one where you unlock the airlock to get inside.

That fucking section is almost always guaranteed to crash the game. I've been lucky insofar of the game always logging me back in that spot rather than forcing me to redo the whole fucking thing.

You're luckier than I am. It always boots me back to suiting up in the airlock at the start.

I feel like the nacelles should be below the saucer for the compact bruiser look the Reliant had...

Really? I levelled my Andorian there recently and I had no bother with it. And I’ve no memory of issues with it in previous playthroughs.

Is the glitch determined by server or something? Because I have never came across that.

I would hope it's a traffic issue, but I'm more inclined to believe there is some element there that causes the game to crash since the only other place I've seen it crash like that is ESD's space lookout on the rear of the club.

Regardless, I feel pity for the fool that decides they want to deck out their ship with Dominion Polaron weapons.

I outfitted my whole away team with the dominion gear, never had any problems running the DS9 missions

It's Marxist socialism which is the natural progression from capitalism as the result of technological progress allowing for a post-scarcity society, but it is not top-down mandated communism. Private ownership and enterprise is definitely allowed, but in a post-scarcity society there is no competition for resources. People are free to run their own restaurants because they like running a restaurant, not having to worry about whether they can pay the bills or not. Private ownership of items is permitted, but in a society where anything can be replicated it's trivial to acquire anything that isn't exceeding rare, and with no need for wealth there's no need to acquire that which is rare for its monetary value.

It's basically a NEET's wet dream if you think about it.

Optimistic sci-fi tends toward that in general.

Would a Saber class be able to survive an unexpected long voyage home? I don't mean as bad a Voyager's, but enough that it's gunna be at least a year before the Saber gets to the nearest space dock.

With some energy rationing, absolutely. Sabres aren’t designed for deep space operations, but Starfleet builds enough capacity into their ships to pick up the slack. That’s basically the defining trait of Starfleet design.

Depends on its crew complement, how much supplies it has, what condition it's in, and what hazards it encounters along the way. There are zero blueprints/deck plans from the usual licensed sources, so anything internal is pure fanon. Only thing we know from secondary canon is it's 6 decks with a crew complement of 40 and a maximum emergency complement of 200. I'd say sure, but only as long as they're traveling through some interstellar space that lets them replenish base materials via the bussard collectors, and not the great void outside the galaxy.

To be fair, his other decisions worked pretty well... for a time. Possibly that was a coincidence.

TNG kept going because of the inertia generated by Roddenberry and the cast
The writers on DS9 went out of their way to resit Berman at practically every avenue
Voyager was a train wreck

TNG had the benefit of everyone but Berman knowing their shit once Roddenberry's senility got pushed aside. Then Berman let everything get to his head and made Voyager with a bunch of yes-men, shoving all the people with talent and competence on DS9.

Berman followed the Garfield theory of design. That is, if you make something as generic as possible, no one will hate it. Then again, no one will love it either, but the people that love Trek are a (relatively) small demographic. Berman was literally aiming for the demographic of people that would put it on in the background for noise and people that didn't have anything better to watch.

Obviously didn't work considering how badly Enterprise tanked the ratings.

I've had Gumbo all of once in my entire life, and I can say, if it isn't, then the Federation cannot truly be called a utopia.

Post-scarcity doesn't necessarily mean limitless resources, goods, and services; I think there's a fairly good chance that high-energy applications such as transport tech and holosuites have to be "earned" in some way.

It could be a Master/Apprentice situation. You work for him and he teaches you how to cook cajun. DS9 and Voyager made it clear that replicator food is very samey or bland compared to the real thing. Combine that with the fact that no one knows how to cook anything on their own and suddenly some nobody Professionally trained Cajun chef that just moved in is the talk of the colony.
Old man Sisko loved running his restaurant but you can bet your ass there was a year long waiting list to get in, and if you're the type of jackass that picks a fight with staff, you'll probably get blacklisted, not just from his place but from all authentic restaurants and have to spend the rest of your life eating repli-food.

The general assumption is that, because it is all re combined protein and carbs, replicator food just all has the same texture. So meat is all the same consistency of spam. All fruit has about the right flavor, but the texture of mashed avocado. No matter what it is, there is just something *off* about it.

There is that one where she wa disguised as Romulan Tal Shiar operative and had to boss the command crew of an Warbird. And I kinda liked the one where she was trying to take her Commander exam but kept failing it hard.

This week started off with a nice bit of wrap-up RP that we had to cut short last week due to tech issues. Specifically, the players and the crew of the Ophion were still trying to sort things out after their encounter with the nebula-sized creature known as "Oracle." Of note, we saw the Captain and XO talking about why they joined Starfleet, and one of the Engineers activating a Maddox-type AI so that it could chat with its "little sister" android. Thankfully, I didn't have to spend too much time talking to myself as the AI and the Android chatted.

After all that, the players arrived at a set of coordinates that they'd acquired from an ancient race (Pre T'kon), known as the Progenitors to the players, cache many sessions ago. This particular set of coordinates had symbology similar to others in the cache that indicated some form of insectoid life. Sure enough, scans of the nearby system revealed life on a class M world. However, the planet was split between two distinct and separate species: One avian and one insectoid. The former was still using crude oil for power, while the latter was using basic Fission. Needless to say, the players correctly decided the Prime Directive was in play, and thus did not make contact with either species. At first, anyways.

In their further scans of the planet, the players picked up an ancient SOS signal emanating from the DMZ between the two species' territory. An Away team was sent down, which then discovered a Progenitor stasis pod fully intact and functional. But before they could beam it and themselves back to the Ophion, a group of the Avian species attacked with projectile-based weapons. Tense combat followed, in which the players raced to set up their pattern enhancers and beam out before they were overwhelmed.

With the pod safely back aboard, they began to unlock it. Inside was a Progenitor military grunt, seen in pic-related. Lots of questions for them followed.

Eh. It's a Saturday night, those are always quiet. Here, a half-hearted topic: What was the last Trek you actually watched? What'd you think of it? Enjoy it? Have opinions on it?

For me, it Extreme Measures, one of the finale episodes of DS9, the one with Sloan, which is just a great episode and the final admission that Bashir and O'Brien are gay for each other.

Needed cheering up, and that is top funtrek.

100% top tier Trek right there. Probably my favorite "fun" episode (though if I'm honest, Spock's Brain makes me happy in a stupid sort of way).

I also enjoy Spock's Brain. Whilst yes, it is ludicrous, it is still a decently constructed episode (as a good writer basically wrote it as a joke) which puts it waaaay above the actual shit episodes of TOS.

It has easily the worst line in all of Star Trek (you know the one) but all the beats work and it clearly has a fun spirit to it. Way better than Miri or Charlie X or something equally horrible.

I always liked the Runabouts. I think they were a great addition to the series. I would have loved a slice of life episode about a bored pilot finding some secret plans or something.

He had a small fleet of capable starships and by that point the support of local starfleet vessels in his pursuit of the Maquis, as well as Cardassian co-operation.

The only reason he ended up going full court-martial is because it made good melodrama. There's no character development that it achieves and no story reason why it should have to go that way. It's purely so they could fill time with flared nostrils and shouting, because that's cheaper than rubber-faced pricks talking about latinum.
