My understanding is that they're releasing the Go version of ChainLink this quarter, then letting the community give feedback, and then releasing a final version based on said feedback. For this reason it sounds like the Go version would be testnet and then the final version based on the feedback would be mainnet. I haven't seen anyone on the dev team use the terms testnet or mainnet though so it's kind of confusing.

No. There's a Testnet of the chainlink node network that has been running for months. I have one running on a VPS. Check out Thomas Hodges videos on youtube
