>WASHINGTON/CARACAS (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury Department on Tuesday warned that Venezuela’s proposed “petro” cryptocurrency could violate sanctions against the OPEC nation’s socialist government, a statement that could dent investor appetite for the soon-to-be-launched token.
>Venezuela’s president Nicolas Maduro has called for 10 countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) to adopt his oil-backed cryptocurrency Petro.
You know the more I think about it the more it makes sense for a proto-communist government to use tokenization. You could literally get tokens from the politburo on your smartphone daily for food rations. And you could still trade your currency externally.

It hasn't even been launched yet, or has it?
Wyatt Carter

>The petro's price is initially to be pegged to the value of Venezuela's basket of oil and fuel exports, which last week closed at $59.07.

That president is beyond meme. It's pathetic. I think that's the guy who passed a bill because someone throws mango at him with a message taped to it.

Maybe ether delta. It'd be cool if they got it in binance or bittrex.
Also, America is obviously scared about this.
Logan Lopez
Why? It’s not like American companies will suddenly start buying Venezuelan oil because they opened the crypto-bank of Venezuela to get around financial institutions.
Jack Young
Binance when?

Evan Lopez
Its already happening but not being reported yet.
China has proposed the yuan could replace the dollar in oil transactions. It would find string agreement in Iran, Russia, and Venezuela, which account for a large share of the oil market.
The crunch is that the Chinese have also asked the Saudis to consider accepting yuan for oil. That move could even spell the end of the special military supply relationship between Washington and Riyadh. Even if the Saudis may not feel now’s the right time to switch horses in the oil/currency wars, they might consider diversifying the way they sell their debt. It’s a given that when Saudi Arabia or other Gulf States issue all their bonds in dollars. They could move to yuan.
