Let me first begin with a disclosure: this post is not professional financial advice. Please do not interpret it as such. To give you a bit of background about myself, I am a former investment associate with a global macro hedge fund. Before that, I was a financial analyst with a top American investment bank (initially I was with their private bank operation, then later with their alternative asset management group).

Please note, in the below, I am going to be summarizing/borrowing a ton of material from the DeepBrain Chain (DBC) white paper.

Diving in, let’s start with a very basic description of what DBC is and what it hopes to accomplish. DBC is a decentralized artificial intelligence neural network, distributed over a global network of nodes via blockchain technology. There are two benefits to this approach:

Cost reduction. DBC’s use of blockchain technology provides a dual-cost reduction to businesses. The first cost reduction is the forgone capital expenditure of acquiring the hardware (GPU, FPGA, ASIC, etc) required to start, build up and train a neural network. The second cost reduction originates from the savings generated by not self-maintaining a neural network server (a savings of up to 70%, per the DBC white paper).

Platform security. DBC’s use of blockchain allows data provider and data training to be completely separated out, ensuring data privacy. In layman’s terms: the underlying data learned, which will help further develop the DBC network, will be harnessed without releasing the data’s proprietary info (methods, formulas, etc.)

As advances in A.I./M.L./N.N. continue, those processes will (theoretically) require greater and greater computing power to train/learn/accomplish their tasks, making DBC a potential solution to a problem that is still facing the early-stages of scalability.

I was going to do a dedicated section on the founders, but it’s where I’m running into the most trouble with language. If anyone from DBC is reading this, this ‘Team’ section is where a really good translator would be immediately helpful for the company.

To everyone else, these guys check out on various university websites, but you need to do some digging to find them. Clearer bios with a more succinct narrative would instill much greater confidence from English-speaking investors.

NEO’s smart contract is a cornerstone of DBC’s platform. Additionally, NEO has been very selective about their ICOs and DBC was one of their first. NEO Council is one of the key partnerships cited in the white paper and it was a direct investor (several articles, citing twitter, put the investment at $1 million).

FYI, to the Western investors here, Harbin Institute of Technology (aka HIT) is a state funded research university in China’s C9, their equivalent of the Ivy League. In May 2017, DBC released its cloud computing platform. The working product has over 100 manufacturing clients and includes Microsoft, Samsung, Siemens, Lenovo and Huawei.

There is a serious easter egg in this white paper and I’m surprised no one has mentioned it. DBC has the implicit backing of the Chinese government. To me, this is the single biggest reason to invest in DBC. Page 17 of the white paper: “2017 Q4 // 3. DeepBrain set up a joint laboratory with Shanghai branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences”

The Chinese Academy of Sciences is China’s national academy for the natural sciences. It is the country’s think tank, its governing body, the world’s largest research organization (employing 60,000 researchers in 114 institutes) and has created hundreds of commercial enterprises, twenty five of which are publicly traded, including Lenovo. The direct parent agency of CAS is the State Council of the People’s Republic of China (aka the Central People’s Government).

DBC is a highly-ambitious project. The white paper lays out an interesting problem that will continue to grow as more corporations pursue A.I./M.L./N.N., while not knowing how to defray the resulting increase in computing costs. DBC could very well be that solution. Further, improved marketing and communication, along with hiring a great translator, could really open up this coin to a broader swath of investors. DBC will be one to watch in the medium-long term.
