The skill gap is what makes you money. The skill gap between a recreational player and a professional is very large. The skill gap between the best player in the world and the 10,000th best player in the world is very small. When it became difficult to deposit money into the reputable poker sites, the recreational players dried up. Now it's just sharks passing their money back and forth and losing to to the rake. The various sites still in operation tend to have poor bot detection software, so there's that threat, too. It's dead.

Online is much harder than IRL. You will find fish online of course, but they are far and few in between compared to what you'll get at casinos. Online has become very technical and a lot of easy money left when the US poker sites got shut down. Unless you're very good, you will get fucked up on the higher stakes online. I mean you probably will IRL too, but you don't get rich shits from the middle East throwing their money away online like you do at a casino.

But, if you do get good enough to hang online and learn how not to rely on a HUD, you can do well IRL. It really is much easier when only a quarter of your competition aren't drunk idiots chasing flushes or making obvious bluffs. If they play slow, they're holding. If they are going aggro, they have nothing.

When I was traveling in Thailand I met a Scandinavian guy who was living off online poker winnings.
Apparently French websites were his favorite because they made stupid bets.
He didn't make much money doing it, he said times were so hard for a while that he couldn't afford a haircut.
But he at least made enough money to travel the world and party so he was doing great in my book.

As previous Anons stated, it was profitable fir the first 5 years, 2003-2008 then I pretty much lost and blew through all my profits over the following 5 years.

I warn everyone on here to stay away from poker unless you strictly play live games. All the sites are polluted with bots and it's already been proven,as with chess, ai is superior at playing poker.

The golden era of making poker money online was over like 6-7 years ago. I made 10K starting from 400 bucks in a span of 2 years and I had 15K overall but lost 5K and once that happened I cashed the fuck out and never got back into it. I would play relatively low stakes and enter like 2 dollar tournaments and shit.

yeap, many, many many times winning 2k+ in a few days online omaha.. still ended up down 1k for the year by aways wanting to play higher stakes. The winner is always the rake. Its an ok game but I'd recommend trying to make poker bots if you really want to succeed. that's my plan when I get around to it

lolno. Even when playing largely solved games like heads up NL, professional players make absurd mistakes. Optimal strategies require multiple bet sizes with mixed frequencies for most combos. Humans can't implement these strategies anywhere near perfectly and as such there is a massive edge to be had even against professional opponents.

People generally suck less at 6max or full ring, but you can find very good edges once you have big enough samples on your regular opponents.

If you aren't in the lab grinding out sims or checking every showdown against your opponents, then you won't find these edges. Most are too lazy to put in that kind of work and you end up with people spewing this nonsense about there being no edge between higher level players

While we may not be in glory days anymore, online poker is alive and well in the USA. Nevada and new jersey have legalized and regulated sites with fast, reliable deposits and cashouts. Volume is nowhere near pokerboom days on those sites, but thats mostly a function of the much smaller market size for these ringfenced networks.

At peak hours, bovada and america's cardroom have dozens of midstakes+ games going.

Its still possible to make hundreds of thousands a year as a seasoned professional. You just have to put in the time studying and grinding.

There is a lot of free content out there right now you can use to train yourself up to near a break-even level for smaller stakes games. Check out youtube and twitch poker. Throw $50 online and mess around in the $2 games and focus on refining your thought process.

If you get to that point and still enjoy it, you'd want to look into paid training sites and a database/hud. Thats a ways away for a beginner though

If you have been breaking even in any online games, thats actually quite an accomplishment in todays climate. I'd get a subscription to one of the paid training sites. For $100/month you can get some pretty high level content that could train you up to a point where you could be making hundreds or thousands a month

Advanced Hold Em Poker by Mason Malmuth is a great one.
Put some cash into PokerStars or one of the other sites
play small stakes NL Cash games until you figure out your play style, what range of starting hands you plan on playing with.
Play a few MTTs or Spin N Go's to try and get comfortable with the pacing and riskier play styles of them.

I don't really keep up with content geared towards beginners. I will say the poker vids I've seen from doug polk on youtube are legit. I don't think he really streams poker anymore, but that was also very high quality free content.

I have a Runitonce subscription and I'd recommend it. They have good content for most popular game types (NL cash, tournaments, PLO cash) but not so much content for the spin-and-go sit and go kinda stuff
