I'm a physicist and I think most investors are actually quite dumb. Making money, firstly, doesn't make anyone smart. It's about social exploitation, greed and emotions. The really smart people don't give a shit about "gains".

OR more accurately, one should purchase merely a 3rd of what one would have invested so that if it goes up you gain if it goes down you buy with the other 3rd and if it goes down once again you stick that last 3rd in and average down the cost

i'm more depressed over myself for being so susceptible to greed that i didn't sell when i was up a ridiculous amount (could have been life changing for me) in early january, fully aware that this couldn't go on forever. the crash came in drops, each followed by a dead cat bounce, so i had multiple opportunities to sell this month, but i kept holding thinking it would go back up to a new ATH shortly. after several drops and lower recoveries, i realized that this could be the end for a while so i took my profits, at which point happened to be the literal bottom, yet i was convinced it wouldn't stop there.
oh well, guess i just have to learn everything the hard way.

For me, I was holding one project I believed in but got out after the second time the market crashed - unlucky for me it was -50% from ATH because for some reason that particular project dumped the hardest. Day later it went up like 30%. But the thing is, I haven't wallowed over that loss because shit happens and I realized where things were going. We're not master day traders, not even trying to be. Just do the best long term decision in a given situation and go with it, then put your attention into other things.
