You can call everything bets, but because everything has an effect on market sentiment, those bets have an effect on the market. To say it another way, a person who shorts something is saying "I don't think it's worth as much as the market says it's worth", and if enough people see that and say "hey yeah, that asshole is right, this shit is overvalued!" then the price will go down, thus fulfilling the short.
Obviously it doesn't always work like that, but if a lot of people are shorting all at once, it's going to drive up bearish sentiment in the market, so saying that a short can't have a negative effect on the price of something is not entirely true.

While it's obvious that lots of normies got out after the price fell it's quite hard to accurately estimate their number and effect it had on the market. Take the chart you posted, it is "interest over time", it only tells us number of normies in crypto is not growing as fast as it was in December. Once you already find out how to "buy bitcoin" and create an account on normiebase or whatever you do not need to search that again in google, so no new interest in that query from people already in. You could do some estimation with the area under the curve, but it still won't tell you how many people quit.
