Is this the best whiskey $30 will buy? what do you prefer?

is this the best whiskey $30 will buy? what do you prefer?

whiskey, bourbon, scotch?

The first time I bought a bottle of MM I tried to cut the wax off with the knife part of a corkscrew, thinking there was a cork underneath.

Wow what an amusing anecdote

Heh Heh had to chuckle a little bit man, I mean the part to tear off the wax is literally sticking out bruh.

what are some cheap whiskeys to test out tho? any 40$ or up worth trying at least once?

>inb4 200 different conflicting suggestions

i tried it. it was harsher than the 101 i was drinking prior. it wasnt bad, but i dont see the appeal. why do you like it?

not trying to start some kind of debate, but curious. i could see myself mixing with it maybe for its strong flavor. i really do want more opinions on whiskey, considering ive only been testing the waters for maybe a year now.

for context, im a big alc. used to drink 12 beers a night, but had an accident. doing whiskey now because its tasty and easier to hide from friends and family.

glenlivet glen talloch black label jura chivas ballantines whatever

>any 40$ or up worth trying at least once?
Ardbeg 10
Bunnahabhain 12
The Glenlivet 12

Best bang-for-buck bourbon is definitely Old Grand Dad 114. Once you add some water it really opens up and becomes quite fruity on the palate. Dark cherries especially. Don't drink it neat because it tastes like gasoline lol.

Fiest off, im going to admit that I'm a try-hard. I specifically drink drinks that seem manly to me, and have developed a taste for them accordingly.

That being said, I like Jack Daniels whiskey straight, gin martinis, and Guinness Extra Stout for beer. Anything else is Absolut Garbage. (Strictly my opinion and nothing more)

I just bought these 2 bottles to try, I'm in Australia so I got raped and paid 60 dollarydoos each.

The Grand Dad is ok, nothing special but the Bulleit rye is tasty as fuck. If I can find somewhere that stocks it for a bit cheaper it will become a staple.

Mostly a bourbon drinker. Buffalo Trace is way too good for its price ($25 a bottle) and is my go-to. Basil Hayden's when I'm looking to splurge. Both are great on their own but are also good in cocktails if that's your sort of thing.

>60 bucks for ol grandad

good god I pay fifteen freedom units for that exact bottle

Isn't OGD bottom shelf? I'm pretty sure $15 is around the price of a handle.

Get that Auchentoshan 18 nigga

>$60 for Old Grand-dad

Holy fuck dude

I like Bulleit Rye and Buffalo Trace.

I'll get Ardbeg 10 Year or Glenmorangie if I'm in the mood for an affordable scotch

Unless he did the conversion, $60 kangaroo papers isn't the same as $60 in Obama shekels. In AU, their min wage is like $16-$18 right now, so his OGD was more like $25-$30 depending on where you live in the US. Granted, that's still high. If it was the same price as the bulleit I would just but the bulleit every time.

Basil Hayden's for sure. If I know it won't last long I get BH every time. When I want something better I sometimes grab their ingle barrel if I am not trying something new.

Uh. What? Bourbon isn't bog-water.

This. Bufftrace isn't god-tier, but it's great for the price. Best over-all value, though, is Jefferson reserve. Tastes pretty damn close to Papi, but actually costs less than Abraham's faith in God. Willet comes in a close second for value.

>freedom units
>kangaroo papers

Scotch

Glenlivet

Another Ausfag here.
OGD is shit unless its 114 or BIB, the 80 proof is basically a higher rye verison of jim beam white label, and fun fact it is the same mashbill as Basil Hayden, infact Old Grandad actually refers to Mr Basil Hayden.
The great thing about this family of whiskey is that you can start to get some insght into the differences that age, proof, rackhouse placement etc can have on the final product.

I like the Bulleit rye but find its doesnt do well in cocktails. Unfortunately we dont get any other ryes around the same price worth bying, fucking hating how wild turkey 101 rye was dropped, at one stage I had about 10 bottles stashed after it dissapeared, but a man does get thirsty.

I've fallen in love with Four Roses Single Batch. It's ~ $40 a bottle but it's worth it. Bright, strong flavor and smooth.

Do people actually enjoy drinking that amount of whiskey? Thats like 7 ounces in that snifter, disgusting

Their blended bottle in the mid $30 range is also good and smoother but it doesn't have the brightness of flavor that I love.

just get sum fugging evan williams or early times like normal ppl :D

It's a Wikipedia stock-photo, so for all we know it got poured back into the bottle or dumped down the drain.

I know, you'll barely get a head change from that.

Four roses, buffalo trace and wild turkey are really nice. I'm poor so my usual is Evan Williams, old crow or Kentucky gentleman.

I like Scotch. I wish either of the 12 year Glens were available here for $40.

Weller 107 is probably my favorite. Makers is too something. I don't know what it is but I don't like it.

JTS Brown is the superior cheap whiskey.

Best budget blended Scotch Whiskys
>Grants
>Bells
>Famous Grouse if you've never had a single glass of whisky before.

Glengoolie Blue

...

To the other Australians in this thread, I'm trying to decide whether I should buy a bottle of Starward (700ml) or Lark single malt (350ml) as a gift

Anyone here tried either?

I love it. I work at Moe's Original BBQ and we drink that shit like water.

Someone needs to do this and record it then convert it into a webm to post in a rage thread. It'd sell.

I've tried the starward , it's a pretty decent whisky. I've never tried lark though but I really want to.

I'd rather receive the lark as a gift mostly because I haven't tried it yet and I think partly because I'm from Tasmania .

I am still new to whiskey, but after trying Nikka Pure Malt and Wigle Rye, everything cheaper tastes like nothing.

Just got this. Lots of oak. Heat on the back. 107 proof, but aged 7 years. Not bad though for $19.99

Surprisingly good and only around 24 dollars.

I met a qt grill at a party once because I brought Buffalo Trace and it was her favorite drink.

...

It's a bit much for a single pour. But yes. Nowhere near too much whiskey.

...

What happened?

the fuck do you mean wild turkey rye was dropped? I saw that shit like two days ago.

Not the 101 buddy

Found both of these agreeable.

In a scotch I usually go for a livets 12 or 16 (haven't had them side by side so I don't know how profound a difference there was) and I'm currently drinking some Monkey Shoulder, a mix of three different Single Malts - Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie at the recommendation of a customer of mine.

It's ok, a little sweet for me, but whatever.

I've also heard good things about pic related if youre a fan of Jameson.

Anyway, what's a good scotch not on the sweet side? I like the livets for the citrus without overpowering sweetness, and black labels ok if but a tad too smoky.

And on an unrelated note, what's a good mezcal I can find for less than 40 for the 750? I'm already a big fan of tequilas in general.

Your taste in bourbon is solid, but powers is pretty rubbish.
When you say black label is too smokey do you mean johnnie walker? Not generally considered an overly smokey whisky, especially when compared to the peaty Islays. I would recommend Balvenie double wood for a non smokey and not too sweet whisky.

Islay single malts

these are both the correct answer
usually get turkey though.
Only costs $16 at trader joes

>the best whiskey $30 will buy

>Only costs $16 at trader joes
Where do you live?

Laphroaig.

MM is by far one of the WORST whiskeys Ive ever had. Worse than JD. I could drink straight vodka and have a more enjoyable experience.

For $30, Eagle Rare is among the top.

Not a knob creek fan because not a jim beam fan but fuck this shit is pretty tasty

It's going to depend on where you live.

Really overrated. I can spend $20 on Wild Turkey and drink it on the rocks or drop $30 for Maker's Mark and need to drink it mixed since it's shit.

Really? Yeah I meant Walker, I thought it was profoundly smoky but my palate or the bottle may be fucked.

Will check out Balvenie when I go to purchase my next bottle.

Weller 107 has been near impossible to find for the last four or five months, I found a bottle today and can't wait to pour a glass and light up a cigar. Add just a touch of water and it really opens up. Now if they could get some Weller 12 year out I could make some poor man's Pappy.

Powers is a pretty good Irish, I prefer it to Jameson.

She'd been helping herself to it; someone mentioned it was mine and she came up and we got to chatting. In the end, nothing came of it because I am autistic and wouldn't dance with her.

did this as well

Guys whats wrong with me. I've tried a bunch of different whiskey and they all taste the same. Like liquid tree bark, its disgusting

Do you like other spirits better? Vodka, gin, rum?

none of them taste particularity good to me

Whiskey's not for everyone, it tastes the way cologne smells and not everyone wants that in their mouth. Just drink something else, there's no wrong way to get drunk.

I don't drink it for the taste. I drink it because it takes the pain away. Briefly.

There's your problem

In that case shouldn't you be drinking vodka or beer? You can get much more alcohol per dollar that way.

You know I had the 12 year and it really didn't impress me that much. But I do want to try William Larue Weller Antique.

Oh god, that shit is terrible. It tastes like Aunt Jemima and smells like antifreeze.

It has some smoke but it is on the lower end, unless you were drinking the double black, or you may just be sensitive to smoke flavours, some people just dont like smokey whisky

>falling for the "glass bottles are better" meme

canadian hunter plastic jug whiskey ftw.

just go with plastic jug vodka. popov is all you need.

This. Makers is overrated for some reason.

Bulleit is good for mixing but I don't really enjoy it on its own but Eagle Rare is amazing for the price and tastes good straight.
