Tons of shit to do, our neighborhood is beautiful. I am even entertained by the schizos on the subway. Just walking around is entertaining in NYC and you really can't say that most place. Kinda jealous, but why SO far out? Suburban Boise is not expensive and on your salary you could easily afford an acre or two closer in. You could live closer to the city without living IN the city, and there are a whole bunch of advantages to that (proximity to emergency services, better schools for the kiddos, closer to various kinds of shopping/groceries you might need, etc.). On 300k salary, living an hour outside Boise sounds a little more like you're looking to be completely alone than like you're just tired of city living.

There’s a time disconnect too as you age. For me, an hour drive, which covers 60 miles, is nothing. I have buddies that do the Orlando, Dallas, Vegas thing, and an hour drive for them covers 25 miles.

I guess I measure things in time, not distance. If takes me an hour to get to Best Buy, and it’s 60 miles.... that’s the same as a city dude in Redondo Beach driving up PCH an hour, which gets him 10 miles.

You're not going to get anything within 15 miles of Seattle or Bellevue/Redmond (where the big tech companies are) that cheap, but if you go just a little further than that, there are plenty of properties you can get in the $900k-low $1 millions range. It's probably a lot more than Boise but still quite affordable on a $300k salary.
