I'm not even in REQ, but I pay attention to every fucking project in the top 100. The only option other than LINK that REQ had on the table for internal crypto-fiat conversion was specific partnerships with specific banks.
Meaning that in order to convert say BTC to EUR, one (or several) centralized banks would act as middlemen. Which would go against the very foundation of what REQ intends to achieve.
And they had to put alternatives out because only having one oracle option meant that REQs faith was resting on LINKs success, which is always a dangerous position to be in. Their only [real] option was always LINK.
