Whiskey General thread

what is the best rye, pic relate

Why are there whiskeys, scotches, and bourbons, and then it says all of that on the label anyway???

Drinking bulleit bourbon for the last 2 days. Recently really enjoyed Bookers, and found angels envy way too fuckin sweet.

thats bourbon, user.

bulleit is pretty legit

Just bought a bottle of Johnny walker blue label it's really good I'm not really into whiskeys but I have to broaden my taste can drink rum forever

Try rittenhouse. Better deal than bulleit by far. Inb4 shill I've probably talked about this whiskey 3 times in the last week here

Or you could have a nice big glass of water, it's nice and cold and yummy too!

fuck you bozo

I really love some nice cold knob

But does water make me happy and disinhibited?

does alcohol really make you happy user?
or does it just dull the empty feeling that slowly grows bigger with each passing day

>artificially flavored "whiskey"

not even once

Bulliet is really nice, it is my go to at the moment. Picked up a bottle of their rye stuff too, it is good.

>buying an entire bottle of blue label
>when you could've bought Lagavulin 16 or even Laphroaig 18 for less
Man fuck you richfags with shit taste.

You probably have a preference for single malts, but that's your own taste. I've never had it, but I hear BL is actually quite phenomenal.

Why are bourbon and rye so fashionable nowadays? Did something happen to the industry that made people interested in it.
Also since I've never been into it, what's a good beginner bourbon?

In the UK at least there seems to have been a surge in it. You only used to get Jack Daniels (yes I know it isn't technically a bourbon) and Jim Beam white in the supermarkets but now we get all sorts.

I think the rise in the popularity of cocktails has something to do with it, as I don't know many people who drink it by itself. Or it could just be a change in attitudes for whatever reason like the recent surge in craft beer and gin over the past couple of years.

I really like Bulleit and Buffalo Trace, they are quite cheap too so a good place to start.

Ive heard that Green Label is a lot better for the price.
I just can't fathom people paying 200 dollars on a No Age Statement blended scotch

Bulleit is pretty decent, cheap, and readily available. Never had the rye version though I prefer bourbon.

latest purchase

...

Never tried that, but I live very near there.

What is it like?

A bit like Talisker actually, but not as aggressive.

Drinking this right now.
And I'm thinking of getting either a bottle of Old Pulteney 12 or Speyburn 10, any other suggestions for a good cheap whisky?

Aberlour 10 is my go to cheap whisky. Old Puletney 12 is pretty good though

American craft whisky became a meme
It is also being shilled in asia as a luxury product

Tasted old pulteny 12 once.
jesus Christ was it good.

Bunnahabhain 12yo is tasty

How does it compare to the 10yo?

My new go-to bourbon. This stuff is off the hook for $17. I haven't tried the single barrel yet. I doubt it's worth the $10 price difference but I figured I'd give it a try.

>General

I've never tried the honey jack daniels, is it really good?

No. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of liqueurs, but try barenjager. It actually tastes like honey (unlike the honey jack).

That has started appearing in my local supermarket for £30, which for reference is about £8 more than Bulleit and £10 more than buffalo trace.

Is it significantly better than them?

Hullo you malty meme masters and welcome to another whisky review on ralfy.com here at the Manx Bothy!

what the fuck do you think bourbon is a subset of?

>trying to ironically meme on ralfy
Kill yourself.

Ralfy is the man

everyone itt seems to drink whiskey straight (as do i most of the time), but what bourbons and ryes do you think work best in a manhattan?

Ryes:
Alberta Premium
Canadian Club Small Batch
Gibson's Finest

Bourbon:
Knob Creek 100 proof
Four Roses
Bullit Bourbon

>I've never had it, but I hear BL is actually quite phenomenal.
Things self-admitted whisky neophytes believe.

Bingo bango. Green Label is the king of the normal JW tier. Blue Label is a childish display of conspicuous consumption. It tastes good and you shouldn't turn down a glass offered to you, but value for price is way out of whack.

Also had a bottle of this once, very good whiskey.

It's alright. Nothing special.

Tasted some 12 year old Lagavulin yesterday, shit was cash.

I've been a very big fan of pic related, but I'd like to move away from sweetened and artificial flavored whiskey to a nice affordable bottle that I can sip sparingly.

What would you recommend? I'd prefer either a rye or a scotch.

My mother bought me a bottle of this for my 21st birthday, only I have bourbon whiskey, distiller's select. I have just about as much left as you do. It is a fine drink. Benefits of living in Kentucky?

Nu-males

These guys know what's up

>You gonna introduce me?
>This Jane's a widow.
>Give me a piece of that ass.
>Jane's my widow.

all day eerday son

love this shit

>liking Ralfy
>disliking craft whisky

I'm planning on getting a bottle of this sometime in the near future.

>Bingo bango.

How about in english which properly communicates your intent and doesn't rely on telepathy to be fully understood.

You just want that because of the name, don't you?

I like the 15 better since it's similar to the 10, but with more of everything. Mainly more warm fruity flavors whereas the 10 is more lemony.

I wish I could still drink whisky

Now every time I take a sip I get some massive heartburn. I miss being able to drink normally with out issue

Get James E Pepper Rye. They're the exact same mash bill from a large distillery, just bottled at a higher proof.

Its good because its literally a younger Woodford Reserve.

I have simple tastes and want to branch out.
I like Wild Turkey 101 and Buffalo Trace. Bulleit is pretty good too but I don't like it quite as much. What should I try next?

Same except every time I take a sip I wake up with a massive hangover and something inevitably broken laying nearby.

This shit took me by surprise.

It's remarkably good for what it is. Matter of fact, I still maintain JB white is better than most give it credit for anyway.

whoosp muh pic

Laphroaig 10yo.

No, I want it because it's unchillfiltered, natural colour and higher strength whisky from a small craft-oriented distillery.

is maker's mark meme tier

yes

I disagree with labelling things as "meme" anything but maker's mark is a thoroughly average bourbon that doesn't deserve any kind of special reputation. It's the Jack Daniels of genuine bourbon.

Any recommendations for my first scotch? I quite enjoy bourbon, I've had wild turkey, bulliet, etc. but I'm looking into trying a scotch without paying $50 a bottle since I'm a beginner to it. What would you guys recommend for around $20? I have tried clan McGregor and it sucked ass but was $10 so I can see why.

VAT69

>What would you guys recommend for around $20?
Which state do you live and what are your preferences in terms of palate?

Pick up the cheapest Macallan you can lay your hands on.

I've heard of it, I'll look to see if I can find it.

Florida. I am looking for a relatively simple "scotch flavored" scotch if that makes sense. Just a good example as to the characteristics of scotch, the smoky, woody, peaty flavors that make it.

Nice, I'll give it a swing.

>cheapest Macallan
Only thing you could find is an $8 50ml mini of Macallan 12, and that's one of the blandest Speysides out there for the price.
Honestly 20 bucks is probably only going to get you a blended scotch so I say try Ballantine's or Dewar's White Label.

Adding to that note if you like the peat I'd suggest trying Highland Park 12, especially if you can find an earlier bottling, and if you are comfortable with intense have a dram of Laphroaig Quarter Cask at your local pub its a fantastic budget Islay and its what got me into scotch.

45 euro in spain per bottle, mama I'm coming home.

Anyone have any experience with American Single Malts? Just picked these two up.

Should I buy Johnny Walker black label?

Yes.

I bought it.

Someone told me this was good cheap shit but I can't find it anywhere.

What is the Evan Williams of Rye and Canadian whiskeys? The one that's as cheap as possible while still being decent.

Nah. Something about all flavored liquors makes me want to puke though. Besides Fireball.

>he fell for it.

Very funny user, got a gig-
>picture is legit
>buying an entire 750cl of Black Label
DUDE WHY

I love this stuff and I think whiskey is generally boring

That's kind of the same thing to me

Good goy

It was $30 and pretty good. As my first scotch it ain't bad.

You should have bought a mickey.
Now go try Caol Ila 12 and regret paying for an entire bottle of Black Label.

It's really good, just also really overpriced.

As opposed to a half bottle?

I didn't want a blend and pretty much everything cheaper than it was a blend. I'm quite satisfied. It might be overpriced and all but I think it's tasty and that's all that matters. I just wanted to get a decent scotch as my first and I didn't want to Jew out and get a shitty bottle. it worked out

Green label and black label are literally the same thing so long as you're not a massive snob. The only difference is which one a professional taster prefers but they're made the same way otherwise.

Left this at home in Europe, got it as a gift.

Really just starting out with whiskey, but I quite liked the smokier Talisker. But now I'm in the US, and making do with bourbon. Haven't really found one that appeals to me yet, it's quite sweet.

Good to know, next time I'll definitely try that, I was unaware. Thanks!

Nigga... did you even read what you wrote before you hit 'post'?
>They are literally the same thing except they're not but otherwise they are
That is what you just said.
Lay off the hooch for a few days, my man.

Maybe you should grow a brain before coming to this site, Timmy.

Wew. You sure showed me! High five, brotendo!

Are you talking about the regular or single barrel Old Forester? If it's the regular then I would say no, it's not worth it over Bulleit at that price. Over here Bulleit is more expensive though.

I just tried the single barrel. I'm no Ralfy, but to me it seemed the same but smoother and more mellow.

Oh really?

Elijah craig is my favorite but its a little spicy if youre a beginner to liquor. Four roses is a good and inexpensive starting places bulliet is good one. I hate weller personally.

It actually tastes better than it looks.

I don't believe you've ever tried it.
