Buddhism teaches self awareness, and no there are not many buddhists that sit all day meditating untill they reach Nirvana, some do. But most of them are constantly out in the open helping people, contemplating and philosophizing within their community.

If you were truly desperate to get out of your shit mental state you would keep an open mind towards trying some practices which seem 'out there' to you at this current point in time.

My recommendation- spend time in nature with copious doses of psychedelics (shrooms, LSD, DMT) and get back to the roots of who you really are and what truly fulfils you as a human being. From there on begin a daily practice of yoga and meditation, alongside whatever else you decide to spend your time on.

After you reach a certain level of proficiency in controlling your mind you should go to a proper 2-4 week meditation retreat, ignore the dirty hippies and philosophical talk about karma this or past lives that and focus on simply keeping your mind still, and see what happens from there. I won't promise anything about reaching enlightenment/discovering the meaning of life, all I can say is that everyone I know who has done something along these lines has emerged a lot more peaceful, purposeful, and content.

Take a look at the historical manuscripts found in ancient China and Korea especially when Buddhism and Confucianism took root. They were highly nepotistic, corrupt and oppressive.
