suppose evolutionary pressures cause Cephalopods to evolve human level intelligence and begin tool building,
what kind of technology do yo think they could develop underwater?

I would wager their technology would be very different from our kind of technology and it would involve a lot of chemical manipulation....maybe they would use chemical reactions, store it somewhere around their body and use the ink to blast off heat

They'd develop spooky technology

The most simple of tools are the wedge, the lever, and inclined plane. Proto-civilizations typically start with the lever fist simply because a lever can be as simple as a tree branch and they're plentiful. Even monkeys use sticks as tools or weapons to protect themselves. In the ocean, not so many trees. I just don't see it happening with the resources they have to craft tools with.

>suppose evolutionary pressures cause Cephalopods to evolve human level intelligence and begin tool building,

SIIIIIIIGH. Why are we assuming "HUMAN" level intelligence is the only intelligence to have? Why not them develop a unique Cephalopod level intelligence.

Also, no, they cannot make underwater technology, because the constraints of a water world does not permit these things.

dumb pedophile

Squid guns.

they could use whale bones, corral, driftwood, leftover human garbage.

It would be pretty challenging to develop metallurgy underwater...

They would probably be stuck with stone tools.

>yfw their intelligence is already on humans level
>they just don't use tools because it's not necessary/not possible under water
>they are already one step ahead of us and know that progress is not what makes a living being happy
>instead they just enjoy their lives, easy going
>no need to advance, just enjoy the ocean
seriously, why do we as humanity need tools, technology and science?
to make life easier for us of course
but when your life is already pretty nice, like a squids life, why develop technology at all?
there's simply no reason to

They would probably be obsessed with mathematics. They'd have their own geniuses like Jacob Barnacle and N.J. Whaleburger

Can you guys suggest me a good book on evolution of invertebrate? this thread made me interested

perhaps they could have a completely biological based technology like nids or zergs.

Have you ever read the book "Manifold: Time"? It has this happen. They leave the solar system.

So you don't end up as sushi on somebodies dinner table.

>be animal
>all animals lives are happy and great
>things try to kill and eat me every day
>sex is meaningless and reproduction often fatal
>live every day wondering if I'll have enough to eat or if you'll just starve to death
>any minor injury will probably kill me
>life is extremely short, most of it is spent in constant struggle to find food and avoid predators

>be human
>live in material comfort for most of my life(assuming not in Africa)
>never have to worry about literally starving to death
>medical care is widely available, death is unlikely barring freak accident
>lifespan is enormous compared to other animals
>top of the food chain, never worry about predators
>enslave or kill other animals for amusement
>society is filled with all sorts of entertainment, like movies, video games, porn, books, sports, etc etc
>have so much food that a significant portion of the population is in danger from being too well-fed
>literal only problem is being sad

but hurr durr animals dont have taxes they must live great lives
Fucking memers.

It will never happen because cephalopods only live for a decade or so.

the premise of the op is that some environmental pressure causes a need for it.

Most important reason humans are technologically developed, is because we are social creatures and developed language so everytime a individual dies we don't lose all the progress it made. Squids are loners, no cultural developement for them.

>evolve human level intelligence

Who's to say they don't already have it? Intelligence isn't what makes humans successful, it's our communication skills and societal structures. Any random person can't just invent computers and space ships intrinsically.

But yeah, without the need to compete for social hierarchy the Cephalopods are never going to develop "human like" intelligence. Still interesting to see what they do have going for them.

holy fucking shit! octopus has invented the wheel
Is there any other creature on this Earth, other than homo sapien, that's invented the wheel?

My dog can roll over, I don't think he invented the wheel.

no, your dog IS the wheel! you have invented dog

how the hell does it push itself fowrard ?

>Published on Mar 31, 2012

It uses its muscles to act as gyroscope, producing energy inside the coconut shell which is transferred into forward momentum.

These fucks are going to lead to some crazy discoveries I think, they are too alien compared to the rest of earth life.

>Incredible Octopus Behavior Nearly Caused Scientist To Drown From Laughing

Guys....It is rolling down hill.

Perhaps cuttlefish could use their ability to change pigmentation to develop a language

manipulation of other undersea animals. like facehugging a shark and control his movements

Do I have spell out why no one has responded?

Octopus have 9 brains, one main brain, and each tentacle acts independently with it's own nervous system acting like a brain. Now neat thing about octopus is they can regenerate a lost limb. When fishing for octopus, as in Japan, they'll cut a few limbs off and throw it back and it'll survive and heal over time. Could you bisect a limb and split it on 2 so it'll have an extra tentacle? If each tentacle has a brain then would bisecting each tentacle double it's brain power? Could you bisect each tentacle, wait for it to heal, and then bisect each one again till you created a super intelligent octopus?

Because it would still resemble our intelligence by the use of the same math and physics.

Maybe something like water manipulation. Like in that movie the abyss.

Nothing beyond pointy rocks, because well you see electricity dont do so good in the water.

They would need to overcome their fatal reproduction cycle first
