I'm a prep cook/line cook and I make $15 an hour. I make food from scratch, process produce and meats, then I cook them for customers. That being said, if McD's payed $15 an hour I'd rather just work there. So much easier. That won't happen though. They'll get a few good years out of it, then the automation will happen. In all seriousness, a minimum wage is not meant to be relied on to raise a family, or even live "well" being single. Minimum MEANS minimum. You can get by without a smartphone and an internet connection at home and cable tv and any luxuries. If you want better, put in the effort to deserve better.

I already made $17/h including tips when I was a line cook. There was never a week with low tips, either. Even when we had dead days during the winter I'd still get like 200+extra on my check and the only time that shit lowered was when other people got in the tip pool. When we had less people working I'd get like 300 some extra. But I don't think people should have to rely on tips, not very place is doing the kind of business that the place I worked at did.
But shit, some of them do better than that.

Unless we're talking Corp places like mcds that don't let their employees get tips. Fuck those companies, you know they can give more than they do.

No, its not likely to close many businesses, much more likely to reduce hours and number of employees while increasing prices. One thing is for sure, the business aren't just going to eat the costs. Businesses don't just have piles of extra cash just lying around, but industries are very competitive with small margins, if you legislate higher costs for them they will either move to reduce their operating costs or increase their revenue.

The idea that these laws simply man that these faceless rich businessmen will simply make less money and all the people will make more is straight up absurd

I got laid off in April, went unemployed for 7 months even though I had 5 years retail/3 years manager experience. Finally got a part time job at a grocery store where I get a whopping 11 hours a week.

And then people yell at us to get a job and it really isn't that, it's the fact it's impossible to get full time work.
