I know how the CIA did it in the past before the internet was a thing they would give interns the names of people and then tell them to look through all these magazines and newspapers from that country and circle any articles that had that person's name or picture and then I guess someone else took it from there so I assume they still do that shit but it's probably more automated and with the internet much easier

It is automated and moves you into different categories such as threat/pervert/drug dealer based on eye movements (web cam), time spent moving down a page (reading over certain keywords), and the obvious, time spent on and replies/topics made relative to others. This information is organized and if you match enough tickers, you will be placed into a new category, where new posts will also be presented to confirm/deny the original assumption based on the data presented to the system. If enough triggers are tripped, real people get involved.

They literally don't. All the top AI researchers work in the private sector. The FBI doesn't have the leet hackers and cutting edge software that cop shows would have you believe. FBI has software which searches for certain keywords and narrows it down to a list that gets sent for manual review. Stuff is often overlooked because of how incompetent their tech is. Just recently it came out how they overlooked the tip about the school shooter in Florida, for example.

They just develop bots that will monitor threads/replies and alert the user when some words/phrases appear.
The guy job is to watch this shit, develop the "bad words database" and lurk problematic boards (plus normal ones from time to time) to understand the meta.
