It's more something I'd add as a small part of a dish (some pieces/rings on a hamburger), than make a substantial part of a dish.

Red Onions are best raw; their weakness is in the cooking. If you're trying to fry them or especially caramelize them, you're better off with sweet or yellow or white onions.

Red Onion works best for salads due to a combination of it's crispness, sweetness, low sulfur content, and color. Sweet onions wouldn't be bad either, but red onions at least are more aesthetically pleasing in a salad IMO.
