You can't just wander around in Alaska and pan for gold, stupid. Most of the prime areas are state land, and not allowed, or have glacier claims, so any gold you find belongs to the stake holder. There's a handful of places you can just go and pan, but they're tourist traps and were panned out over a hundred years ago.
The same goes for the lower 48, as well. You have to find out where it's legal to pan and keep any gold you find, and the theoretically rich areas have stake claims or are state/federal land.

I first went shovel and pans, now I use a hand dredge to get the dirt from underneath the rocks under the water, plus a little sluice box.
It's fun, exiting, but I never tell my family about my gains. Gold fever is a real thing, and there are some really crappy family members with more rights than me.

He lived in Upstate New York originally and said the weather isnt much different. Slightly more snow but not bad. He does a lot of fishing (lives in a houseboat) and hunting. He doesn't have anything for electricity if he runs out of diesel for his generator and it can be quite expensive to live there if you don't hunt because everything is flown in.

If you want to live like a prospector I doubt there is a better place to be.
