With dark rum, you want huge flavor. Cruzan black strap for example, tastes like maple syrup. Molasses bomb.

Dark (black) rum i'd say you use as a mixer mostly. Cruzan is a spiced rum. Like your captain morgans, sailor jerrys, blackheart.

You want to sip rum? Start looking at aged rums. Bacardi 8yr is a perfrctly acceptable sipping rum.

Want a bit higher quality? Appleton estate 12yr. Diplomatico exclusiva, pussers blue label navy rum, pyrat rum xo.

Clear rum=mixer
Dark rum=more flavorful mixer
Spiced rum=usually cheap, usually high proof, usually has one main flavor. Like capn morgans with vanilla.
Aged rum=premium mixer/sipper

Kraken is just plain bad. Fireball on the other hand is an insult to the entire distilling profession.

I figured a higher price point leads to better rum, but since I like Bacardi black on the rocks my tastes are probably garbage in your eyes.

I personally like jamaican rum and trinidadi rum. Some of my favorites are from guyana. I drink a lot of cheaper stuff from the virgin islands with coke. I keep stronger 151 rum in my flask during the winter when i have to work outside. I find the power keeps me feeling awake and warms me up

One of my favorite black rums in myers dark from jamaica. I'll mix that with coke all day and finish a 750ml over lunch lol

Pyrat xo has a strong orange flavor and smell
Zaya 12 (blend of 12 rums, not 12yr) has a strong vanilla taste and flavor.

White is again, basic standard mixer. Black strap is a molasses bomb. Huge powerful flavorful rum. 151 serves it's purpose. Single barrel is aged and makes for a wonderful sipper. Let it sit in the glass and drink it slowly. It actually changes the longer it sits.

12 yr is great. Earthy guyanese rum. The 5yr white is a decent mixer.

Blue label is great. Cheap too. Sip on this all day. The red label 15yr old is a tad pricey but this shit is excellent. Like a single malt whisky in rum. I wish they sold this here.

i don't really drink this stuff, it's cheap enough to where you can just get a bottle and mix it with a bunch of different stuff until you find the ones you like. captain morgan brand stuff tends to all taste like vanilla to me.

Kraken is terrible, any rum that has even a hint of vanilla is sick, and most likely loaded with those shitty flavors because the batch didn't turn out right (see: captain morgan's 100 for reference).

Had a dark n stormy for the first time recently. I was really disappointed. I like dark rum, but the lightness of the ginger beer and lime juice just doesn't mix with dark rum. You might as well use white rum in this.

Why would you use a light rum? The drink needs the strong molasses flavours of a dark rum.

It's actually good with pinapple juice and half a lime squeezed in a cup. Maybe dash some bitters in.

I like to mix Kraken with vanilla coke, plum bitters, and simple syrup with lemon juice. Good stuff.

Rum is easily the best tasting of all the liquors. With that said, it doesn't have much in the way of heritage like Whiskey does.

Zaya is still pretty good. Used to be way way better when it was 12 yr. These days it just has a heavy vanilla taste. Which for people who like that? Nothin like it. Mixes well too for a pricier mixer. If you like that vanilla flavor, captain morgan private stock might be something you'd like.
