After about 6 months of CONSISTENT, DAILY work and practice, you should be good enough to hire.

so - i did this. worked at medium sized construction firm (200 employees) every year resentment grew I was earning 100k doing all the technical drawings and planning while bosses making double that with no skills other than talking bullshit. quit. started doing what i was doing but from home as a freelancer.
pros - get to see my family.
cons - getting insurance for a one man band, particularly professional indemnity, is a nightmare and makes it almost unsustainable. lots of wanking, man i mean when you work from home you end up wanking 2-3 times a day it's fucking hard work. getting paid - there is a lot to be said for taking hat weekly pay check. i don't like confrontation and i hate ringing stupid accounts payable bitches chasing payment for work i did 3 months ago., yeah tghat's right - most construction companies pay 30days plus end of month, and then they pay you when they feel like it after that. waiting 90 days to get paid is not uncommon, sot he cashflow situation sux. i earn about 1/4 of what i did as a wageslaver but it's slowly building up as i get better and get more clients. ama whatever.
