Old American restaurants

When's the last time you sat down at an old, unfashionable diner or restaurant for a homestyle American meal?

I'm talking comfort foods like meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, open-faced turkey sandwiches, pot roast, etc.

A place like that near me just closed after 80 years. In my hometown, we lost a similar place after nearly 70 years. Is the old American food dead?

I eat breakfast at the same greasyspoon every morning before work. Read the paper, drink a few coffees, catch up on daily habbenings in town, etc etc etc...

I bet it's been a long time since you had *dinner* there, though.

That type of food is seen as unhealthy as well as bland as fuck. People tend to have better ways of making the classics at home anyways.

My wife cooks dinner every night before I get home from work, so...yea.

I'm not sure what so unhealthy about it. And it's only bland if the place making it sucks.

Went to a place like this when I attended a cousin's wedding in flyover land. All the locals agreed it was the best in the area. The veal was obviously not veal but rather some ground meat pressed into a puck. The mashed potatoes were obviously from a powder. The only highlight was dessert, I haven't had jello topped with whipped cream in easily 25 years. Overall 2/10 would not repeat.

Isn't the dessert your fault, for ordering fucking Jello?

>is old American food dead

No, you just cook it yourself loser

I feel bad for states that have such shitty food that meatloaf and mac n cheese are comfort foods.

I'm sorry that you've never had good meatloaf or mac and cheese.

Did you go to a Luby's or what?

What you describe would not be considered comfort food. That would be white trash food at a restaurant.

It's a real tragedy.

I'd like to open a restaurant with an 18th century english / colonial theme.
We'd make meat pies, and boston baked beans and shit.
You know, real good old fashioned white people food.

>hahaha stupid ass northerners with your traditional ""comfort foods""

>now excuse me while I suck out this insect's brains hahaha

Why can't we all just get along.

I recently stopped by an old school diner on Long Island in som little town and had a full dinner. Stuffed mushrooms, baked potato, cup of soup to start. Shit was so delicious even though it was a touch too oily and garlicky. 9/10 would do again

>Long Island
>"little town"

>afraid of seafood
>afraid of spices
Why do you hate flavor? Perhaps this is why you are so angry all the time.

I'd post that gif of the obese woman crying when she gets near vegetables but then I would be depriving you of what real food looks like.

Why not both?

I live in the heart of where cajun food is, and I still love all of the other American comfort foods.

Never had crawfish. Are they any good?

stop it user my dick can only get so hard

Good news, people add both to their mac and cheese now! It's time to get out of the swamp and see the world

One of these is attached to where I work and sells meals for staff at 50% off. So lunch yesterday I had a tuna melt.

I got a pot roast sandwich at Denny's a few weeks ago. Good sandwich, nice and soft.

They taste similar to lobster, but you'll have a hard time finding them plain.

>that neon yellow cheese mixing with muh seafood
Why would you even?

Kevin?

There's also more than one type of cheese now. It's going to be a bit of a shock when you finally leave your double wide, but I think you'll like it

If you like that kind of shit just get on the highway and drive until you see a Cracker Barrel.
>Is the old American food dead?
It's more that the purpose these restaurants served is no longer needed. 70 years ago men didn't cook and unmarried women generally lived with their parents. Which meany unmarried men needed a place to eat. And what did unmarried men want to eat 70 years ago? Something that resembled their mother's cooking. Over the last 50 years fast food has taken over that role. It's partially due to demographic changes, but also changes in taste. Put a meatloaf platter up against a burger and fries and for most people the burger wins. But while old American might be resigned to chain fake country stores in semi-rural areas don't forget New American is a thing. Across the country people pay decent money to go to upscale places where some chef is doing riffs on old American dishes, but sourcing his ingredients better than your diner could. So I'd argue this kind of cooking isn't dead, it's just had to go upscale to survive, because on the low end it couldn't compete with fast food.

Danny?

Yesterday OP.
>waitress' name was I shit you not Ilene
>order Open Face Turkey sandwhich, fries, and a Malt
>slice of hot apple pie comes free after dinner
>get a free meal coupon because I showed them my Military ID
Gotta love Midwestern small towns. Its gonna suck going back to Iraq :^(

At least you get some perks before you're taken out by an IED.

Kek thanks m8. The 7% off veterans discount at the movies and free college are the only thing I have to look forward to when I get back here

There is one near where I live that is in an old Hotel from over a hundred years ago that serves country/ Amish home cooking. It tastes like something your grandmother would make you but with restaurant quality and it's reasonably priced too. The only downfall is that they are closed in the winter so I have been really waiting to get back there

But that was the only good part. The point is they excel at preparing food that comes in a box
It was called Hartville Kitchen

those look like some fire ass crab cakes.
i'm making some home cooking tomorrow on a new smoker i just got, but that makes me wish i'd picked up a few pounds of lump crab meat.

they're awesome. i've always loved crawfish.

This is far to reasonable and well executed to be a Veeky Forums post. But yes.

Absolutely nothing beats a backyard crawfish boil.

Tfw have an amazing new orleans place in my hometown
Beignets and hickory caffe au lait for breakfast is top

>tfw diner makes the best damn pot roast I've ever had
>tfw I'd have to drive 20 min out of my way to get to it

Good post

>And what did unmarried men want to eat 70 years ago? Something that resembled their mother's cooking.

That seems like a pretty big generalization

It is, but it makes sense considering men weren't expected to cook and the best food a working class man most likely came across was made by his mother

Why do you need both bread AND mashed potatoes? Isn't one starch enough?

Not OP.

I always thought one starch was enough, but in the old days, bread was cheap filling if you didn't have enough of the other things. There was always bread on the table for that purpose.

>not liking both traditional American Comfort food and the things you're posting
Faggot

Yes, very good imo.. nice sweet morsels

Quality post m8

when i want those things i drive down there and get em from cafe du monde. usually i wait until crawfish season so i can bring back a sack of those for a boil along with some andouille.
