It's a bay leaf. You put it in soups and stews while they cook and remove it afterwards. Kind of a basic essential for every spice cabinet.

what flavor does bay leaf actually add? I don't have any to taste right now and it's always been something that I just took for granted in the past for soups without bothering to find out why it gets thrown in there to begin with

It's a flavor along the same lines as rosemary or juniper. Unless it's old grocery store shit.
