What do you think of this one?

Just read it last week. I enjoyed it, though I can't help but think Hesse was a little full of himself when he went through the effort of concentrating what is essentially homebrew doctrine in such a small book.

Also, it is pretty gay. Nothing wrong with that aspect, but I was not expecting such homoerotic tension..

Pretty much my favorite book. I loved the simplicity of the dialogue and narration. I found that to be very striking.

One quote I always remember is
"So what can you do, Siddhartha?"
"I can think, I can wait, and I can fast"

Hesse

Why don't you read some Fromm too? Maybe some Kundera?

I consider it an essential book.

I don't remember anything about it.
Steppen Wolf left a bigger impression in me.

Buddhism-lite for degenerate hippies and teenagers

If you want a novel you're better off reading something else

If you want Buddhism you're better off reading the sutras

It's a great book that serves to introduce Buddhism to Westerners written by a Western author.

Despite the nay sayers in this thread, the book is a real gem. It's a short book, but packed with a great story, and plenty of thought. You can read it easily in a weekend (or day). It's worth reading.

Which translation should I read? Hilda Rosner or Joachim Neugroschel?

Rika Lesser did the best translation. (I've read them all)
