Now some companies did reduce people's hours to make them part time so that they didn't fall under ACA coverage mandates, but they didn't have to fire them. Also, many (if not all) of those companies could have just kept their employees on and started paying for their healthcare like many good companies did. Instead they decided to push their employees into poverty and let the government pick up the bill for their healthcare once they met the criteria for government assistance. Which means higher profits at those companies - due to government assisstance to their wage programs. This is a hallmark of so-called conservative economics where it is ok and celebrated for companies to be on welfare through their employees, but it is horrible for those employees to be welfare queens.

They have one of the highest PE ratios for a retail sales organization. Their cash flow and balance sheets are very impressive. They could pay their employees probably 50% to double what they pay them and still be profitable.

Here's a very small example I participated in when I served. At the end of the fiscal year if an infantry battalion had leftover ammo or ordinance we went to the range and simply exploded shit without any training purpose whatsoever. People on the small arms firing line were instructed to just put the M16, M60, and .50 caliber macine guns on full auto and fire down range until all of it had been shot up. Probably disposed of several million dollars of ordinance for no reason other than to be able to request at least the same budget amount the next year. Keep in mind a battalion is a very small unit.
