Read good books and always look up words when you don't know them. I even underline them and include the definitions in my marginalia. Funnily enough, there were at least 5 tricky words on the test that I distinctly remembered, from having reading A Portrait of the Artist recently.

There's just no way the average person knows what 'sedulous' means, let alone 'tatterdemalion' or 'valetudinarian'

I always write down words that I don't understand on a piece of paper or something like that. not only is it helpful but it's also kind of interesting because you'll definitely notice if an author uses a particular word over and over. I remember seeing "bequeath" all the time in Absalom, Absalom! for example. and now that word always makes me think of Faulkner.

Also if anyone is interested in expanding their vocab I recommend the dictionary.com application with Word of the Day notifications turned off. You'll forget 95% of the new words you come across, but it's good for consolidation and worth it for those random words that somehow lodge themselves in your memory.
