When I was in the Navy back in 2001, I was part of a 2000 man "working party" on a pier in Norfolk, we were passing boxes of food hand to hand, up a ramp and into the ships storage areas.
Got a truckload of Pork Chops, date on the boxes was 1951, had stamps on them indicating they were supposed to be shipped to Alameda California for loading on a ship bound for the Korean Conflict.
Mentioned this to my Chief, he claimed to have seen and eaten food that had been prepared for WWII, told me nothing goes to waste, a proper preparation and some apple sauce and I would never know.
Ate no Chops on that deployment.
Chief's have their own Mess decks and buy their own food, so he wasn't going to be eating 50 year old frozen pigs legs.
