>what are staples

ITT: we try to guess anons' ethnicity through their grocery lists

Not him, but my staples are frozen pizza and milk. The rest varies depending on what's on sale.

Ok, but even with bread, I try a new kind every week. I alternate between cow, almond, soy, rice milk. I go between different kinds of rices, etc.

Bakery bread

Eating fish that regularly is not good for you -- try and space out your consumption more, to avoid mercury accumulation.
You should switch to brown rice. You should stop drinking soda, and make it so that more than 1/9th of your list is actually nutritious.

my boss actually has done a bunch of research and neutron activation analysis on mercury levels in fish, because there were a tribe of escomos with crazy high levels of mercury in their blood and hair. it wasnt coming from the fish though. and even then, salmon and perch have even less mercury than species like tuna

They're low in mercury, but their recommended serving per week is 1lb off the top of my head, max, and that's total for both. And as for the Eskimos, they're eating wild-caught fish presumably, which is lower in mercury, so that point is moot especially if you're eating farm-raised salmon. That's interesting though -- where was the mercury coming from?

He said they used to break thermometers up and make jewelry with the mercury.

Apparently it bubbles up and look neat.

>caring what other people buy

Aw, sweetie no.

>where was the mercury coming from?
I can't remember tbhfam but it was some really strange source.
On a slightly related note, when one of my professors was a student, a bunch of his lab group members started getting sick, so they eventually tore up their lab looking for all kinds of stuff in the ceiling and floors, and under the floorboards there were small puddles of mercury from an old barometer that was leaking.
and I buy wild caught fish from this local market, and some farm raised stuff from publix.
i'm not too worried about it, especially with all the other stuff we live with/around that's worse on a daily basis.

That's it. I usually go by the soft drink and chips isle to just look at stuff i won't buy

Whatever has a 50% off sticker on it.

I just take 2-3 hours to walk up and down the nearby major street and I hit every grocery store there to see what's expiring. It's mostly the higher-end stores that do the 50% off thing, so I get to enjoy slightly higher quality food than what the lower-end grocery stores have on offer, and I pay a bit less too.

It means I prepare meals with whatever ingredients I can get my hands on, but if I go early enough in the day then there is usually some form of meat/fish on sale which I build my meals around. It's fun too in the sense that I eat vastly different meals every week and it's always a surprise as to what the meals for that week are going to be.

I'll sometimes buy stuff that isn't on sale from the local Asian grocer such as:

Broccoli
Carrots
Onions
Potatoes
Black pepper
Salt
Green onions
Milk
Yogurt
Leafy greens
Frozen veggies
Chicken breast if I couldn't get any meat on sale

I used to rip the 50% stickers off, but I've come to terms with the way things are and try to focus on the good rather than the bad, and it really isn't that bad at all.

I forgot that I almost always have brown rice in my cupboard and some form of bread from the local bakery (whole wheat, rye, pumpernickel (favorite)). I go to the bakery just before they close and buy whatever is left over from the previous day; given that they're going to throw yesterday's baked goods out, I make out like a bandit.

Well as long as you're aware. Also jesus, mercury is some shit.

That's the weekly/twice a month list

Once a month list is usually when I get my meats and canned foods, or shit that's going to last me all month.

I'm currently trying for a $25 a week budget, but I might up it to $40 because I hate living cheap. Even though it forces me to do more home cooked meals and I feel better eating it.

Pro tip: Youre going to want to have at least two grocery stores you frequent. Dont buy salami/meat/cheese from big brand stores like Jewel osco or Walmart, youre paying close to double.

My father keeps five freezer chests and two twenty foot freezer containers full of food.
At the beginning of each week, I'll go through these and take whatever tickles my fancy, and plan the week's menu around that.
I do, however, always buy eggs, mushrooms, Jarlsberg cheese, frozen vegetables (broccoli, spinach, carrots, peas) and make sure that I don't run out of short grain rice (porridge, sushi or risotto), flour, oats, onion, garlic, oil, aluminum foil, baking paper and dishwasher soap.
Once a week I'll make some kind of cake or confection to bring to work, and shop accordingly.
I also make sure to keep a few cans of unsweetened condensed milk in the house, for the sole reason that I never remember to buy milk if I'm cooking something where the recipe calls for it.
