What is the most based way to cook sweet potatoes, I boiled them and mashed with butter and added caramelised onion and it tasted aight. Is there a better way and excuse the heresy but, a way to make them not as sweet?

Caramelized onion is sweet too, so you probably shouldn't use that. I usually steam or bake them, then add some sweet spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and/or cardamom. Clove tastes really good on them. You can also add a bit of black pepper. And add a bit of salt too. They don't really need anything else, they're already fairly moist compared to white potatoes and don't even need the butter, I've learned.

Nothing, it's okay if that's your preferred way of eating sweet potatoes, but putting more sugar on them just makes it feel like a dessert. Which can be good, but I usually eat them as a side dish.

I was finally able to go to an Indian market and get more cardamom, now every time I open my spice cabinet it smells amazing. Someone even walked by as I opened it and made a comment because they smelled it too.
