It just hurts my soul. I'm a college kid working two jobs, and one of them happens to be at a grocery store. I see people load their carts to the brim of unhealthy trash, then pay with their ebt while I'm stuck here eating ravioli, ramen, and ham sandwiches barely able to get by.

I ought to have a say in how the money that gets taken from me is spent. My personal notion is that we should eliminate all in-kind welfare programs and replace them with a negative income tax (aka just give people money) but I'm in the minority there. As it stands, people care that the resources that are expropriated from them shouldn't go to pay for steak and lobster, as that seems to indicate that the people getting this aid aren't in as miserable a situation as they might seem to be.

There's a reason being a college student isn't the same thing as being poor, it is your choice to spend 40 or more hours of your week in studies versus gainful employment. There is no right of the govt to support you while you do that. There is no human right to get free college either. You are sacrificing your immediate concerns for your future gain. If you really really wanted to not starve your butt off, you would have saved your money a year before starting and then supplemented your expenses around your college part time work with that amount. In the olden days, before student loans, people had family support them. I did not do that, I worked and paid every cent of tuition as it came, such that I graduated with no debt. I did that in the state college route. My sibling went ivy league, and needed $800.mo in family support to not be in a dangerous neighborhood, to still have a car when her peers couldn't, and to supplement food. There is a gap between what you can you do in loans and grants and the actual cost of living in most popular city centers, you see. She graduated with debt, but makes a good salary (physician). What is the difference? You have choices. Stop resenting the crap food people buy and just consider yourself. You receive plenty of tax support whether you realize it or not, especially if you are a student. The reason SNAP and EBT isn't restricting food types is that not everyone can actually shop at groceries, but are urban poor getting food from 7-11 choices, where they aren't selling bulk rice, bulk dried beans, ham hocks to flavor the beans, etc. They sell hot dogs and canned ravioli.
Maybe when you graduate, you will be smart about social issues, or the working poor, but its not looking good right now for your mental health.

Once you pay the tax it's not your money anymore. Taxes are the government's money, and the government chooses what is done with them. The closest thing you have to a say in that is your vote. Beyond that you have no say whatsoever.

As someone who manages a grocery store and convenience store that both accept EBT, almost all EBT transactions at the grocery store are made by well-mannered people who purchase sensible things, lots of rice, beans, discount meats, whatever vegetable is in season or on sale, instant noodles, and other cheap filling meals while almost every single tranaction at the convenience store is a $3 sugary drink, a $6 bag of chips (sometimes two), and $10 of candy.
I'm far more comfortable selling someone a $10 steak or $12 lobster than I am selling them overpriced, processed sugar.

Though, one thing I should add is that I live in an area that is 92% white, has a food bank that is actually capable of feeding everyone that applies for it, and is over an hour away from the nearest walmart so I will admit that my views are very biased.

Me and my entire Indian family and about 5 neighbors can live off of that, easily.
