I'm looking to practice my cocktail making, and I found a few interesting recipe ideas. I wanted Veeky Forums's opinion on exactly what brand of alcohol I should be using to mix them with; I'm looking for the most cost effective option.
When it comes to mixing, what brand of spirit would you recommend for >vodka >gin >rum >whiskey >brandy
Carson Ross
Admittedly a large part of this is novelty, a few fantasy-inspired recipes, so I'll post some of what I'm using.
>2 shots vodka >1 shot gin >juice 1 orange >juice 1 lemon >juice 1 lime >shake >garnish with a slice of lime
Mason Roberts
Drunk Dragon: >1 shot vodka >1 shot gin >1 shot blueberry syrup >serve without ice >garnish with slice of pineapple >garnish with small dollop of whipped cream

Oh, yeah, all for at-home practice. When I get some practice in, I'm gonna try to host a small get-together, supplying interesting alcoholic drinks.

Fair point, I do need to work on that. At the moment I'm just listing the fruitier, more dessert-like cocktails. I'm gonna get to some heavier ones when I get back later today.

Sub the vodka for Cointreau and you have a decent riff on a Sidecar
Mason Martinez
Sounds great, thank you for the guidance. Fog Cutter: >2 oz orange juice >1 ounce lemon juice >.5 oz orgeat syrup >1.5 oz white rum >.5 oz gin >.5 oz brandy >.5 oz sherry
Grayson Morgan
You're also mixing a bunch of liquors, almost Long Island Iced Tea style, which will make the flavors of the spirits clash. Like why would you mix rum, gin, brandy, and sherry? Choose a main spirit and then develop the drink out of that. Like a botanical gin would go well with herbal, citrus, and bitter elements but less so with sweet rum, oaky brandy, and nutty/tangy sherry. I know you didn't come up with the Fog Cutter but it's not the best way to use your spirits.

Vodka: Smirnoff, Absolut Gin: Bombay Sapphire, tanqueray if feeling fancy Rum: I highly recommend Brugal white rum Whisky: usually you'll need Bourbon, so Bulleit is a good and not so expensive choice Brandy: no fucking idea m8
