Well, first of all there are so many drink mixes in a MRE because you're supposed to be drinking a ton of water every day to counter that effect.

Also, soldiers in the field can't always get their hands on clean water or sanitizer tablets, so sometimes they may need to drink from a river or stream or something, which will have a 99% chance of causing explosive diarrhea

He didn't like the Canadian MRE dinner, but he loved the breakfast and lunch so much that I think they overruled it.

It's rare for MREs to be outright bad. They're generally made to be high salt/high fat so despite looking ugly they're usually pretty tasty.

I've noticed that a lot of the modern MREs that Steve covers have whole wheat biscuits, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and other whole grains. Is this just a bias based on what I've seen or have MREs just gotten better?

That's not really intentional, and I know that newer MRE biscuits have a bunch of fiber added to them because people were complaining about cement shits. The gum isn't a laxative like people say, they're just chiclets.

No, he's just really interested in MREs and various other rations ever since he had one while camping in 1997. He's also into militaria and history and other cool stuff like that. You can read his mreinfo.com posts if you want to catch up on your Steve lore. MREinfo is a nice place in general.

Nearly forgot, the tins are great for storing small parts for something. They stay together pretty well yet open easily, and they come with bits of paper to divide the inside into two and take notes on. They also still smell like chocolate and coffee for a long time after they're empty.
