I was 23 and home from the Air Force with my new wife. My parents wanted to take us out to dinner. I love seafood. Dungeness crab and steamer clams being my two favorites.
They took us to an all you can eat seafood buffet at a place called Tug Boat Annie's. I leveled the place. I was there about 3 hours and it was mortifying to my wife. People were coming out of the back and pointing at our table. "That's him over there". It was like I was Homer Simpson. A waitress even came over and said something like "I've been allowed to offer you piece of Prime Rib if you'd like it". I declined and just kept going. Finally my wife was squirming so much and we were laughing that we started to make a scene. I just called it and said we could go. I honestly could of stayed a lot longer.
Dungeness and I go way back....I just don't fill up on it. My dad tells a story when he was stationed at Whidbey Island on the Navy base. They had an all you can eat buffet on Friday nights. He said I did so much damage one night that they tried to charge me as an adult instead of a kid. I was like 10 years old. So yea...I have a history.

See, what you can do is, go in for a late lunch special. Lunch prices are awesome, they're better. They're lower. Very good prices.
You're in this for the long haul. the marathon runner. So you eat slowly, taking time and enjoying yourself. You're with friends and can talk for a very long time.
At some point there is a switchover. The lunch service is turning into a dinner service. The food is better, more of it. It's very good.
The prices are high, so very high because the food is the best, but you've already got in with your golden lunch ticket.

Feels great to go nuts on your favourite food, right? There's not many foods i can really go all out with - my appetite has actually diminished lately, i think.
That said, mac and cheese can disappear pretty quickly if I'm hungry, and there's certain kinds of candy you just do not offer me if you want to keep any. Mcnuggets, too. Give me a nice 20-box from the drive-thru; by the time they get home, they've cooled down just enough to be edible but not so much that they're disgusting.

I employ this tactic at the casino buffet sometimes (L'auberge in Lake Charles, LA usually). Get in at 10:45 for the breakfast price of about $12, eat a little bacon and eggs, then at 11:00 they they change to the dinner buffet which is like $35. Saves almost $100 with 4 people
