It's practically useless. Only .000000001% of us need to be math wizards and humanity will do just fine.
The real question is, why are people who aren't unparalleled geniuses bothering with math?
Jose Turner
Math has intrinsic value and shouldn't be shunted to the side or have a million work around in every universities department so economics students can avoid the "hard " math that is offered in pure math that's relevant to their subject and can instead take some "math for social science " class
Math should be way more integrated . Why have we as a society failed to teach the innate value of pure math but succeeded in the innate value of a picture of unworn babyshoes?
Lincoln Anderson
Art & Music & Philosophy aren't practical so why shouldn't they learn Math?
Parker Campbell
I just told you. Math is practically useless. I don't mean "practically" like "almost." I mean it literally. Advanced math is practically useless. I know I'm a relative brainlet. I'm not wasting my time on "hard" math.
And it's not that I don't think it's useless. Quite the contrary. It's important as fuck. But it should be the pursuit of the highly intelligent only. I'll keep flipping those burgers senpai, you keep putting rockets in space.
Christopher Young
See Also I'm not intelligent at all and the Pure Math I study isn't relevant to any application
Aaron Howard
But advanced geometry and topology IS relevant and practical to Art
Aaron Robinson
Everybody learns far more math than they do art, music and philosophy.
But anything past basic math is a waste of time for the vast majority of people.
Adam Peterson
Art majors aren't the majority or the masses though. They're just as weird and niche as mathematicians. Math was more tied into Art and philosophy in the ancient era but in the modern era there's a huge chasm for no real reason My argument isn't >math is so enriching we should teach it to everyone
It's >these pure math concepts are relevant to art but art programs refuse to teach math
Jackson Campbell
>Why isn't geometry and various beautiful math structures taught to art students? Because they're studying art. The fact that they might appreciate it doesn't mean it's going to be part of mandatory study. Many artists do enjoy geometry and topology.
>Why is math seen as this weird thing... It's not. Why do you think that it is seen that way?
Dominic Hughes
I believe math is a pillar of art ! It's not about appreciation as it is a requirement . Great artists before were mathematicians and philosophers and biologists . I don't see why modern day art has to be robbed of these things
Liam Flores
The best musician I've ever known had passed 3 college level calculus classes before they turned 18.
Easton Turner
Because people who study art are usually half-witted misfits who want to be unique and not bother with a realm where objective right and wrong exist
Dylan Perry
>Why isn't geometry and topology and various beautiful math structures taught to art students? Because they have very limited application in actual art.
Joseph Perez
there's something about music and math, I can't really explain. almost every really gifted mathematician I've ever met was a musician on the side, and almost every really good musician I've met had a soft spot for math.
David Moore
Music is very mathematical but the intersection between the two is very ignored .
I find the intersection between formal science and humanity is often ignored universally
Jordan Garcia
>art and philosophy aren't practical absolute idiot detected
Hudson Hill
Retard.
Dylan Fisher
If by "advanced" you mean lines, planes, and kindergarten shapes.
Alexander Diaz
Advanced math often becomes useful in physics. So yeah, you are a brainlet
Eli Williams
Until I turned 18 they were also the best friend I had ever had, that's my fault I guess.
Ryder Edwards
That's why there's a distinction between applied math and pure math. Nobody is forcing you to learn "pure" math but if you want to become an engineer, say, then you need to learn the basic principles of that math you'll be using. If you hate it so much it's easy enough to memorize the steps most of the time. But if you're getting a degree, you should be exposed to the math involved even if you never use it again because it helps you to gain a better understanding of the material you're studying overall. Like in construction, there is tons of software out there that can do load tracing and beam calcs for you but if you want to be an engineer you should at least know what the software is doing for you. Hell, if the software can do your job, why do we even need you, right?
Ryder Barnes
>And it's not that I don't think it's useless. Quite the contrary. It's important as fuck. But it should be the pursuit of the highly intelligent only. I'll keep flipping those burgers senpai, you keep putting rockets in space. at least he's literate
Grayson Stewart
You fail to account for what art has devolved into. Commercial art nowadays is just a way to launder money. Real artists could benefit from learning maths, but the people that go to school for that shit just get a course in postmodernist bull ("everything is relative, nothing matters, the west is shit")
Austin Baker
"often" lol of all the shit that gets produced in advanced math, only a small percentage finds 'applications'
Sebastian Phillips
>It's practically useless. WRONG!
*Topology of Electrical Circuits blocks your path!*
Differential Geometry is applicable in Astronomy / General Relativity
And almost every branch of pure math is applicable in EE & Physics by the way.
Isaac Watson
>That's why there's a distinction between "applied "math"" and pure math. Yeah, similar to how there is automatically a distinction between something which exists and something which doesn't.
Ian Ward
I've seen a few art schools with little programing courses that teach their students to make fractals and "glitch art"
Gabriel Russell
you need to be in prison to know how prison works its the same thing with math you can't show topology to someone who hasn't showered with a bunch of niggas
