Is ADHD a meme? Failed most of my classes in middle school. 1.4 GPA in High school, maintained a 2.7 in CC. Straight A's in math and comp Sci classes, but physics and circuit analysis kicked my ass. Barely made the cut off for an average state school on the quarter system and I'm getting slaughtered. My brother got diagnosed with it, always thought his problems were nothing because I assumed he was a lazy unmotivated Lil shit like I was in elementary. They put him on concerta and he improved dramatically. Went to get evaluated and now formally diagnosed with it. Is this just an excuse for laziness? Is this just a product of smartphones and computers? I browse Veeky Forums way more than I should. Anyone have any experience with this condition?

Forget about all the philosophical shit. If the drugs help you, why not take them?

Although you should probably experiment with not using Veeky Forums/porn/smartphone/etc for a while also. It can't hurt. My attention span improved dramatically when I gave up porn.

Download a Chrome extension called Stayfocusd. It will block distracting websites

No, it's not a meme. ADD I'm less sure of, but ADHD isn't. All the tech may contribute and cutting some out may help but that's total speculation. Did they prescribe you anything?

t.neurobiologist here

Is it a meme diagnosis? Yes it is. To be more precise, it's not even a proper "disease" but rather an umbrella term for a number of symptoms that might not even have the same causation. It's like calling diarrhea a disease instead of a symptom.

But should you get your hands on concerta if you're an academic? Definitely. That is as long as you don't abuse it and actually use it as it's intended to be used. If you manage to get a diagnosis and a 72mg per day dose, your performance will improve dramatically

>encouraging a heavy stimulant dosage daily for a “meme” diagnosis

At least you’re not a doctor.

It is a meme. What you have is called "laziness" and "boredom". You're simply not really interested in learning so you choose to be distracted by other things. I guarantee if you were locked in a cell for a year with nothing to do but read math textbooks for a year, you'd come out of that cell far smarter than you were going in.

If you know what's distracting you, remove the distraction from your life entirely.

>Dr. Leon Eisenberg, the 'father' of ADHD, said just before his death that ADHD 'is a prime example of a fictitious disease.' ...

>I guarantee if you were locked in a cell for a year with nothing to do but read math textbooks for a year, you'd come out of that cell far smarter than you were going in.
Brainletism cannot be cured, given that IQ cannot be increased.

>heavy stimulant
>concerta

cocaine is a heavy stimulant. concerta is literally the lightest option out of all the adhd medications. and while adhd is a meme, the symptom of having a short attention span definitely isn't. concerta will help anyone when it comes to academic performance, i don't see a downside if he can get a prescription and isn't a junkie

utter bullshit.

>Dr. Eisenberg wasn’t asserting that ADHD isn’t a real disorder, but rather that he thought the influence of genetic predispositions for ADHD (rather than social/environmental risk factors) were vastly overestimated
So basically its to do with differences and being outside the box. The pervasive neurosis throughout society that there is a normal. There is no normal, being outside the box is actually a fucking achievement, we are basically still monkeys and do not belong in rigid schools, where the majority of us would really prefer not to be. Some high energy free spirit child starts getting bored and expressing his high energy and blatant lack of care for the institution he has basically been forced into. Oh thats right, time to give him some pills (often amphetamine based). Take your pills johnny, you are not normal. Come bacl to the box johnny, it's dangerous out there. Johnny if we dont take control you might just expose us for the buffoons we are. Society is absolutely toxic.

>It is a meme. What you have is called "laziness" and "boredom". You're simply not really interested in learning so you choose to be distracted by other things.

that's untrue. not OP, but i'm very interested in learning. there are many subjects i think are interesting, rewarding and beautiful. sometimes it's just hard to make your mind do what you want it to do. your brain just throws things at you and it's hard to ignore them.

Message to all "ADHD" persons: do whatever the fuck you want just don't harm others and don't listen to anyone not loving you for the type of person you are. Especially not doctors, who are salesmen and have to go by the book (the whole source of your "problem") and especially not anyone else that says you require psychoactive pharmaceuticals to exist as a human being. Believe in yourself.
Some of the most successful people in the world who have actually done cool shit who would apparently be adhd, achieved more than other people that throughout their lives likely misunderstood them and thought there was a way and told them how things should be. Respect to you all :)

you're an idiot. while i'm the guy that posted adhd isn't a real thing, what you're saying is still moronic. human society of course has some values and skills that are needed to advance. being able to defer gratification and focus is obviously one of them. if someone cannot learn that, they cannot learn any complex discipline like a technical skill or a science that would require prolonged periods of focus without immediate gratification. it's the difference between a human and a dog.

that's because you aren't gratified enough, aka don't enjoy that activity enough (even if you say you do). that's what the amphetamines help you with in the first place

hence the name "attention deficit disorder". if i wasn't interested in doing what i'm trying to do, there's no way i'd put myself through the taxing, up-and-down ride of daily stimulant use.

>that's because you aren't gratified enough, aka don't enjoy that activity enough (even if you say you do). that's what the amphetamines help you with in the first place

so i should just seek instant gratification? i regret every instant i spend distracted, and i am thankful for every instant i am able to study. i find learning to be extremely gratifying in the long run, but it's not easy to direct my attention because my baseline mood is pretty low and instant gratification provides some relief from the constant ache of dysthymia. but i don't think it would make me very happy in the long run to seek instant gratification.

Is this how people who don't have ADHD actually view concerta? It has side effects that should be taken seriously, and at least in my case my parents or doctor should have talked to me more about them, but it's a fucking miracle drug. The problem isn't not fitting into "the system" or whatever, it's about losing hours doing literally nothing. Not doing unimportant things that interest me, but literally nothing. I hate it and it feels like I'm wasting my life away.

>so i should just seek instant gratification? i regret every instant i spend distracted, and i am thankful for every instant i am able to study. i find learning to be extremely gratifying in the long run, but it's not easy to direct my attention because my baseline mood is pretty low and instant gratification provides some relief from the constant ache of dysthymia. but i don't think it would make me very happy in the long run to seek instant gratification.
Exactly! I genuinely think studying math is one of the most satisfying things there is, but I'm constantly doing other things because it's so hard to focus. And suddenly the day is gone.

>can't learn a complex discipline
>is therefore a dog
Nice logic batman.
If people choose to not do that, because they don't want to, they are also a dog. Listen to yourself, fuck sake.
True knowledge comes from experience.
People with adhd have tremendous talent, they just have to discover and lock what it is they want to do. They are good at hands on activities, not sitting still.
In reference to society, i mean the illusion of normalcy. You are clearly a box dweller and probably have no experience of adhd

Who cares if it’s a meme or a real disease? If you qualify, you get drugs that make you better. Sounds like a good deal to me.

ADHD was invented by (((psychiatrists))) to sell you drugs

>If you qualify, you get drugs that make you better

they don't really make you better. they just give you a temporary window of increased concentration followed by a rebound. whether or not it helps depends on how well you can make use of those short-lived periods of focus.

i'm not the one that said you "choose" to get distracted, i'm pretty sure it's physiological. i'm just saying i'd characterize it as a (unwanted) character trait and not a disease. if you want to study, if you need to do it, either put yourself somewhere where distractions are minimal (library without phone) or get a stim prescription.

yes if you don't know a science for me you are as good as a dog. if you live for instant gratifications like eating/getting high/fucking, you are literally an animal and owe all the shit you enjoy (like medicine, technology, literally any construct of the modern world) to people that applied themselves.

>People with adhd have tremendous talent

no they don't. people with ""adhd"" aren't special, or smart, or dumb. they are the average joe with short attention spans.

you sound like a retarded mum rationalizing the "autism isn't that bad" rhetoric because her kid is autistic. fucking brainlet

>short lived

concerta is a slow release ritalin capsule that lasts for 12h. if you take it when you wake up, you'll "crash" around bed-time. the only downside is that when you stop it, you'll be a zombie during withdrawal periods. but if you have a legitimate prescription and you don't abuse them like a junkie, that won't be an issue.

>concerta is a slow release ritalin capsule that lasts for 12h. if you take it when you wake up, you'll "crash" around bed-time

idc what the brochure says, concerta only lasted about 4-6 hours at most for me.

and actually less than than in the period shortly before i switched to something else. perhaps that's just because i was under-dosed.

Whatever m8

>the brochure

the "brochure" says what the blood plasma concentrations during fda trials show brainlet. you either have a high tolerance, or the dose you took was too low

>no they don't. people with ""adhd"" aren't special, or smart, or dumb. they are the average joe with short attention spans.

The people i have met in my life tell a much different story unlike your hypothesis. There are many types of intelligence.

Autism is problematic, but aspergers is just a difference.

>my empirical anecdotes trump all the research done showing people diagnosed with adhd perform lower academically and generally tend to be unemployed

>being so unable to read simple body language ques and voice tones that you have to be trained to interact with people and read their emotions isn't "problematic"

Adderall was the thing that had the most dramatic effect on my life as an adult. I don't even care if ADHD is real or if it's just an excuse for my laziness, but stimulant therapy has turned me from a guy who had a hard time all throughout school paying attention, into a studious, clean, normal human.

I am more social, I go out. It's great. I was diagnosed at 19, it's not too late man. If you think you have a problem, talk to a doctor, ignore the naysayers.

If you take 20mg xr adderall and you feel euphoric you probably don't have ADHD. For me, the first time I took it, I just felt like a more on point version of myself. It's really amazing.

You are an ignorant fool

You have a narrow view of reality beyond your own limits

sure thing brainlet

Hell, I supposedly don't have ADHD and I perform better on 10mg of ritalin. I can focus on anything, and as a side effect I get more emotional and empathic (weird, because that isn't supposed to happen).

The "I'm happy because yes" sensation only happened during the first months I used it and now only happen if I'm in a really good mood from the start, something that due to my failures at life until now doesn't happen too much.

Californian here. Where do I get evaluated?

find a doctor that prescribes it to adults. read the localized version of the dsm-iv guidelines of diagnosing it. find the 2 adhd tests that exist in case he isn't that casual about prescribing. don't mention any former drug or alcohol use
