There is always the problem of schizophrenia, but also: never underestimate the power of people to fool themselves when it comes down to questions that deal with highly emotional subjects (like life and death, sickness and pain, and the sense of one’s own meaning).
Intelligent people are still people: they are not above other humans when it comes down to have feelings. They might very well mistake something ordinary for a real proof that Divinity exists.
The fact is: nobody has ever offered any evidence, and, with the advance of scientific knowledge and technology, all the religious texts of the world are being systematically disproven. The fact that we know can trace the mutation of several species towards our own (the way towards becoming human) is itself a massive blow against all the world religions.
