Need your help Veeky Forums

I graduated with an MSc in Physics last October and 6 months later I still haven’t got a full time job. I even got rejected from my local supermarket and fast food joint because I was “overqualified”.The best I could get was a few interviews but that’s it. Please help Veeky Forums. I really don’t want to end up like pic related.

what is WRONG with the british holy shit

Work as Computer Programmer. Get into a Grad School for a PhD in (Computational or Applied) Physics

What?

Why didn't he just go work in industry? I'm sure the military or oil companies or finacial companies would love to have physisits.

Didn't you get plenty of advice telling you to line up a job before you graduate? Connect with your fellow alumni, your prof, etc and see if they can hook you up with anything.

i did not network because i mainly focused on my studies. yes, i know its my fault i screwed up big time by not networking. I also dont really have any friends who can help me. always found it difficult to socialize desu

>tfw i mainly used matlab and excel during my MSc and wrote my thesis using MS Word

how fucked am I really, Veeky Forums?

Honestly I have the same problem, but you should at least try and send your professor and email and ask if he knows any students or any places. They don't have to be friends, I know people who have gotten some opportunities just by asking people who graduated from the same school.

Motherfucker jumped. It wasn't a "fall". Fuck off with that shit.

I was going do exactly that until my professor who marked my thesis, retired earlier this year...Tried sending him a couple of emails but he never replied back :|

I literally don't know anyone else in my former university other than this other autistic korean guy, but he's now got a job at Samsung all the way in South Korea

i think anything to do with suicide is generally heavily downplayed by the media in order to avoid copycat events

Damn bro thats rough. No one else working for your professor? Try contacting your university and department as a last measure?

haven't actually thought of that desu. are you suggesting I tell them about my situation and beg them for a job, any job? not really sure how that would play out since the physics department is pretty prestigious and has had a few Nobel Prize winners in the past. I mean I've already applied for admin roles at the university, but didn't get a call back because apparently there was a lot of more qualified applications.

Wasn't thinking that desperately, your university must have at least some other resources for careers and stuff right?

matlab is a programming language faggot, if you're smart enough to learn physics, you're smart enough to learn programming

you're not starving to death, you're in good health, you're intelligent. how about you stop being a massive faggot for two seconds and make shit work.

yeah they do, but it was only for a short while after graduation. I'm way past that now. I've got loads of leaflets and stuff for jobs, cvs and stuff

I'm starting to think the reason I'm being rejected is because of my personality, not my qualifications. not exactly sure how i can change my personality since my neuroplasticity is not that flexible at 28 than it was when I was 18.

I've actually applied to several jobs requiring matlab.

Welcome to STEM, no either get out or go balls deep in academia. 6 months with BSc biochem and not even a shit QA/QC job for 40k.

yeah, i'm unironically considering swallowing my pride and applying for teaching jobs which I know will be piss easy to get.

thing is, children freak me the fuck out. i guess its probably because i was bullied for being a nerd way back in high school...

I dont really have the courage to handle a class full of disruptive children...probably will bring back my PTSD

Physicists can also work in Electronics Industry

A Physics MSc specialized in Solid State Physics can work in Semiconductors industry
... although most of these jobs are in Israel, East Asia and Silicon Valley.

A Physics MSc specialized in Optics can work in Optic engineering making Cameras & Optic Fibers.

A Physics MSc specialized in Plasma can work in Aerospace.

A Physics MSc specialized in Nuclear Physics can work as Nuclear Engineer

A Physics MSc specialized in Particle Physics can beg for a job in CERN or other Particle Accelerators

You could try Med School to become a Medical Physicist (specialized in Radiology)

lol dude the ship has sailed long ago for me

i'm not an undergrad anymore to have the luxury to pick and choose which field of physics i want to work in

I don't know what field you specialized.
So I pulled all options.

If you specialized in a less practical field and can't get a job in academia you can still just become a programmer.

But If you really wanna become a High School Teacher or become like that British physics PhD who suicided that's your choice. You decide your future.

also I didn't wrote just for you
I don't know your specific specialization.
I wrote also for others in same situation.

No matter which specialization you have chosen.
There are choice besides becoming a High School Teacher.

what field, what was your thesis.

Solar cells

Though all the jobs are in China, Japan and Korea though. Most of my cohort were international students so they went back to their respective countries

And yes ive also tried applying to phds.

Same boat here OP. Is a master's degree in applied statistics worth it?

sure it is
great movie btw

thanks man. its my favorite movie. im glad you like it too

>tfw drop out of college due to family circumstances
>ended up working at a sales call centre
>tfw you are smarter than everyone therefore I'm a top performer

Feels good man.

b-but Veeky Forums told me physics and math majors are the most employable. Everyone wants them for their """skills"""!

Looks like Veeky Forums was wrong. Again. Good luck on your job search.

Brainlet

do you like some specific field of physics? what else do you know to do? do you know how to build or fix some shit (say, electronics, computers, mechanical stuff, ...)? do you have some interest in a technical field that doesn't absolutely require some academic specialization? do you have some money to start a small business selling/building/fixing stuff?

some ideas:
- buy chinese stuff from a local importer or from aliexpress/gearbest/etc, and sell it though ebay/facebook groups/craigslist/...
- if you already know how to program, learn some new thing (machine learning is the latest hip shit). it's not even difficult at all (and I say so as a college dropout, I bet it'd be much easier for you), it just takes some time.
- if you have some commercial ideas, try making a proof-of-concept and talking to people about it. there are lots of channels for talking to startups people

life isn't linear, sometimes shit happens, and you shouldn't be ashamed of not doing what you were supposed to do... academia is a bubble, the real work offers a much wider range of possibilities and experiences

BTW, you should tailor your CV to the job you are applying to.

Veeky Forums fell for the Physics Meme.
Physics isn't employable.

then learn some moon runes. or flip burgers i guess.

I guess my banter was too optimistic.

You just have to be better. Better than all those other PHDs.

Attached: 06n84.jpg (500x401, 45K)

Invent some shit, patent it, sell it or collect royalties.

haha, degree cucks

>expertise: Excel and chart reading

top kek

this is why i never got the collage meme
if you cant be the best at it (and odds are you wont be) why even bother ? youll end up like this poor dude. i learnt carpenting instead and make 100-120k a year easy...
im aware im a brainlet so i wont even try with that intellectual shit. people should sometimes do a reality check

I feel your pain. I have been in the same situation. It made me angry because these are places with very high turnover. It did not make sense why they wouldn't hire me. They knew they were getting a good worker who would be trained quickly. So what if I left early? They have to fire half their staff every six months.

Can I get a source for this graph to know how accurate it is?

woof woof

some people care about more than money
