There's a couple different schools of thought when it comes to gin for G&T. I use Boodles, a dry gin, because that's what I use for my Martinis, and also I'm a big fan of juniper. A lot of people prefer more traditional Tanqueray. Some prefer the slightly lighter-tasting Plymouth. Still others like to do less traditional G&T's like Hendrick's garnished with cucumber. It just depends on what you like.
Don't listen to , Boodles is nail polish remover. Buy good tonic, not that sugary shit in the pop aisle. You should be able to find Fever Tree in north America or Thomas Henry in Europe. Lime is the norm garnish, everything else is gimmicky (like fucking cucumber or dill). If you want a good gin recommendation, pic related. If you're a faggot ignore this and make what's in your pic.
Fever Tree tonic and Bombay Sapphire gin is a great combo if you want to start at moderately high-end.
Also get soda water, sugar cubes, dry vermouth, lemons, limes, bitters, toothpicks, olives and pearl onions. That way you can make:
-G&T
-Pink Gins
-Martinis
-Gibsons
-Gimlets
-Tom Collins
Voila, you're a bartender.
Welp, im a pleb so i went for this.
Then, after 2 glasses i realized how much i fucking hate gin and that it tastes like fucking aftershave and now im going to the store for a good old bottle of scotch
You’re using a crap tonic. Fever Tree is a fantastic tonic as said. Tanquerey is an OK gin, maybe try it with Elderflower Fever Tree tonic if it’s too dry for you as is. Also, fridge chill your tonic and use ice.
After a certain point, gins are mostly going to be the same in terms of quality. My reference point is New England but I'd say any 750ml bottle over $18 is going to be equivalent in quality until you get to maybe the $40 range, where you start seeing small batch gins made with special flavorings, etc. Anyhow, get some Tanqueray, some (diet) tonic water, and lemon or lime for slices and oil mist. Plenty of ice in your glass, pour whatever ratio of gin and tonic you want, toss a wedge or a slice of lime, and take some of the lime peel and twist/pinch it over your drink, spraying the oils all over the rim and top of the beverage. Those oils are pungent and will do a lot for the smell, and thus your enjoyment of the drink.
I always do a few shakes of angostura
Dry gin will help avoid hangovers.
You drink any American Gins, and expect a serious headache in the morning.
Schweppes, no ice ---> kill yourself
It’s gonna taste like a pine forest took a piss in your cough medicine.
Gordons is a good starting point for gin. As for tonic I recommend Fever Tree like everyone else.
tip: Tanq No.10 is a lot better than basic Tanq.
>Lime is the norm garnish, everything else is gimmicky (like fucking cucumber or dill)
I stopped agreeing with you here senpai. Lime simply doesn't go with many gins, and most garnishes aren't gimmicky (although I can't say I've ever tasted the difference in a G&T with or without juniper berries added to it). Gin Mare for instance goes incredibly well with herbs like rosemary.
Schweppes tonic is shit and Tanqueray is just a mid-tier gin at best, also use ice.
>Gordons is a good starting point for gin
You fucking what?
Dash of bitters brings out the flavours in a lot, Plymouth is one I can think it goes really well with (and FT's bitter flavoured tonic).
Hendrick's is a very good starting gin I'd recommend. Plymouth is also really good. Neither are very expensive. Bombay Sapphire is good but nothing special, Star of Bombay is better. If you want to go exotic, then I can recommend Edinburgh Gin, Monkey 47, Bathtub, Martin Miller's, Brockmans (it's nothing special but a very sweet fruity one that even people who don't like gin will enjoy), Whitley Neill, King of Soho's pretty good if I remember rightly, and finally Tarquin's (Sea Dog is 57% and very drinkable).
I used to work in a pub that eventually collected massive amount of gin so I've been able to try and drink a fair bit.
There is a good chance you're going to black the fuck out.
I dont like tonic. I do Bombay Sapphire and gingerale. With lime
Some people get a terrible headache from gin - just a heads up. Gin tonic is awesome though - enjoy.
Gordons gin was the first bottle of spirits (750ml) i finished in one session.
how do I order that drink?Bombay Sapphire and gingerale?
Green gimble = gin+mountain dew
It's the best.
Botanist and Hendricks are my go to's
If you have a total wine try esme and tann's, great price and super smoov
Fever tree a best tonic
Just take shots of your aftershave, it has the same shit taste anyway
What’s better for G&T - slice of lemon, lime or cucumber?
What about pickled juniper berries?
I know this sounds retarded but gin and pepsi max is actually really nice. It's called a Scroobius in a few London bars.
Completely depends on the gin m8. Some are better with grapefruit or apple for instance. Generally I prefer lime however. Fashion used to always be lemon but in the past decade there has been a big shift towards lime.
In Brazil we call that Punjabi Nigger Ale.
