Are visual novels literature?

Are visual novels/sound novels literature?
What do you think about this guys ?

Fuck off, you loser

Yes.

Be it as it may, playing VNs in English makes you a pleb.

Show me some actual good writing in a single visual novel. It's all padded trite garbage.

Hanachirasu

yes

Truly the pinnacle of playful wit.

Subahibi is pretty gud, the first part and the scene where he fucks the table are my favorites

Take out the visual part. If you had nothing but the exported text, would you still read it? No? Then there you go.

They have a lot of potential, but are held back by the target audience.
There are people who seriously won't play a VN unless it has h-scenes.

Any russian VNs?

Depends on the game, but in some instances, yes I would still read it.

Subahibi is definitely the one that's gotten closest to being "literature" that I've played.

What's literature

S'up Reddit.

Yes, but none has reached the mark yet, probably due to the audience being plebs and the lack of good quality translations. I feel Christine Love's and Rin's route in KS were heading in the right direction.

If your opinion of the height of VNs is OEVN crap then you don't know anything about the medium and should stop talking about it.

Give me a VN that's
>Less than 10hours (no padding)
>Doesn't rely on a cute female character to keep you reading
>Has actual depth beyond namedropping and truism told in a "flamboyant manner"

There are manga and anime like that but VN? I've never found one

If you're disqualifying anything with cute girls in it then there's nothing to suggest. I don't know why that would be a problem.

Also most of the best VNs are (much) longer than 10 hours, so you're purposefully throwing out the best. Making arbitrary requirements like that doesn't say anything about VNs as a whole, just your own tastes.

The trouble I have encountered with them is that they are written for weenies.

Togainu no Chi was probably the least weenie one I've read (not that I read much). The premise and opening was fantastic but like all gay porn it really didn't have strong plot development. Also for a bad-ass, streetsmart, fighter Akira sure gets raped in the ass a lot.

I've nothing against cute girls or moe by themselves, but if an entire medium cannot produce a single work without pandering to the base instincts of young males then, we can doubt of its worth as an art form, moreso literature.

Why are VN so long? Let's say give me a VN that is 30 hours maximum? Even the best won't be that short (Umineko, Fate, Dies irae)... Because even with all their pretense at art, they're still escapism.
When you finish a long work like Higurashi, you aren't enlightened with a new vision... You only feel nostalgic and wish it didn't finish.
If the best VN are 50 hours+, it's not because they NEED that much to tell their stories... It's because they're full of padding and their audience wants this as well, an escape from the world

What's the Fate stay night of literature?

I mean a book about idealism, what it means to be a hero without the adolescent edge, waifus and godawful prose?

>Let's say give me a VN that is 30 hours maximum?
Tomoyo After. It's around 20 hours. It's a sequel to the Tomoyo route from Clannad, so all together it's probably around 30. I don't think there's anything escapist about it; if anything it's the opposite, considering the entire story.

As for something longer that isn't escapist, I'd say Subahibi / Wonderful Everyday.

Considering how the speed at which you read a VN isn't wholly up to you unless you skip through voices, I don't think gatekeeping VNs by length is right.
Granted, I think I heard that F/SN's word count is like 800,000

Ok thank you

Yeah I saw that as well. It's longer than LotR

"Lord of the Rings is ~473,000 words. Fate/Stay Night is 820,595 words.
Prologue: 676 pages, 2313 lines and 26246 words.
Fate: 9530 pages, 28056 lines and 299080 words.
UBW: 7221 pages, 22154 lines and 219495 words.
HF: 9206 pages, 37508 lines and 275774 words.""

I don't know if it's "literature" or not but Narcissu fucked me up when I read it.

You put this in a pretentious way but I did find the Higurashi/Umineko author to have a really bad habit of repeating himself 3+ times. It was super grating by the end and while I like it I didn't feel nostalgic just glad it was finally over.

VNs are a medium of their own. They're not literature.

Hijacking this thread to shill.
Buy Chaos;Child you shits.

I would but I haven't read Chaos;Head yet.

Don't need to. It's a thematic sequel. Reading C;H will only really aid you in getting references to the it in C;C
If you do want to read C;H I would still recommend it, and C;C doesn't release in America until the 24th anyway.

>Chaos;Head
Just watch the anime adaptation instead.

user please

>he doesnt read with his waifu

>he doesn't read while fondling his waifu

Unironically yes.

go back to /v/

My literature club niggas.

what book?

I will never stop enjoying the tabs in these types of screenshots.

worm, by wildbow

Is Saya no Uta Veeky Forums?

yes.

most young adult literature, I guess

Her wheel poem gave me shivers.

>Umineko
Is this worth going through? I finished the first chapter and it was kind of interesting but also really slow.

Monster Girl Quest isn't less than 10 hours long and it has gameplay sections, but it doesn't rely on cute/sexy and has actual depth

The first chapter is probably the worst of the first five, just because it has to introduce the premise and all of the characters. After that it picks up significantly. I haven't read past the fifth chapter, I hear it disappears up its own butt, but I liked it up to that point.

Yes, but only a few of them are worthy

Fate/stay night is shit. It having 800,000+ words doesn't make it less shit.

I didn't say that it doesn't make it less shit?
I was pointing out that F/SN was massively long just by word count alone.

VNs are normally measured by line count. F/SN has 95k. That's pretty high up there but there are longer games; e.g. Clannad, Little Busters, and Rewrite each have other 100k.

key was a mistake

Please don't insult my favorite VN company. Thank you.

Nitro+ is better

Muramasa translation when

after how the west reacted to dies irae i'd say never

give me good VNs about artificial intelligence

Show me some actual good writing in a single novel. It's all padded trite garbage.

Was that supposed to be an example of bad writing?
lol ok.

Idk but I enjoyed katana shoujo

Only if you learn Japanese.

IS THIS A MOTHERFUCKING DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB! REFERENCE?!?

Not even kidding, the most looking forward western erotic games are made by ruskies.
They aren't any good though, as expected.

No they are videogames.

It's literature if it moves you.

Honestly, its as much literature as young adult fiction. Sometimes they have good concepts or settings, but the level of writing is never that advanced. So in a loose sense, it is literature, but seriously, go read a book.

Steins;Gate Zero

joyce is the very definition padded trite garbage
all he does is espouse sentimental banalities

>It's all padded trite garbage.
>implying this isn't what all literature is
If it wasn't, there would be no such thing as a fiction book that is over 100 pages.
