Hey Veeky Forums, how the fuck do I read poetry?

Hey Veeky Forums, how the fuck do I read poetry?

Start with something more contemporary and work your way back.

one word at a time

if you dress like that your a fag

Read AE Housman, I found him really easy to get into.
Also realise it focuses mainly on feelings, try just reading poems through and not deeply analysing them, just reflecting on what feeling it leaves with you.

if you care about how people dress you're a fag.

>having aesthetic means you're a fag
kys repressed homo

>t. pissbottle cave dweller

>that
>an aesthetic

oh look hes from Veeky Forums

I like what I've read so far, is this an example of Naturalism?

i took that photo. there's another taken with the timer where i'm on the far-right.

>technical aspects
What is the form of the poem?
Where are the stresses of the syllables?
If rhyming, what is the rhyme scheme?
Where do the line breaks occur and why does it happen there?
How do the above elements contribute to the expression of the poem?
>aesthetic
How does the poem flow?
What imagery does it evoke?
What kind of texture is it going for?
How does it feel when read/recited?
>Conceptual
What is the idea of the poem?
Is it trying to convey a particular feeling or frame of mind, or does it have something more specific to say?
Which lines support your interpretation?
Why does the poet use the particular words they use instead of others?
What are the thematic elements?
Does the poem successfully convey the idea behind it? How?
>Historical/canonical
Where does the poem come from?
Where does it fit in the overall timeline of poetry?
Who does it borrow from?
Who is it trying to get away from?
What are the cultural elements that the poem emerged from? Do they manifest directly in any aspect of the poem?
Did the poet take the craft in a new direction?

Take your time, poetry is its own language. You don't have to spend an hour on each poem but at least spend a little time to reflect. Writing things down helps.

get in, loser.

PS cardigans are for faggots

That's the worst advice you could take. Do literally the opposite.

Start with Gilgamesh?

Fucking nazi, kill yourself

Learn a language other than English first. Anglophone poetry is nothing but cringe.

Enjoy a whole ton of free verse about racism and oppression

I feel like those clothes wouldn't suit a brown man like me.

The OP made the classic Veeky Forums error of starting his thread with an image more interesting than his topic.

OP here, I bought
>Paradise Lost
>Collected Robert Burns
>Selected Willam Blake
>Complete TS Eliot

Good start? Paradise Lost is probably a bit much for a newbie but I couldn't help myself.

>A Shropshire Lad - AE Housman
>Songs of Innocence and Experience - William Blake
>Odes - Horace
>Georgics - Virgil
>Astrophel and Stella - Philip Sidney
